About the Author

Andrew Himmel practices law in New York City and is a founding partner of Himmel & Bernstein, LLP, located in the Flatiron District. Prior to his legal career, Mr. Himmel worked in book publishing for The Dial Press, Harper & Row and William Morrow. While at William Morrow, Mr. Himmel worked for the veteran editor Harvey Ginsberg, whose writers included Saul Bellow and John Irving. Mr. Himmel lives in Manhattan with his wife, the universal energy healer Michele LaGamba-Himmel. Their daughter, Nicole, is a writer, who also lives in Manhattan.

Rethinking Your Previous Prejudices

I admit that I started The Reluctant Healer with some skepticism due to the mystic elements of the concept, but the first thing that struck me was how well the author writes, and that is what matters most to me in reading a book. Having been thus drawn in, I became intrigued by the idea of a fact- and logic-based attorney opening his eyes to alternative ways of looking at the world and life. I appreciated the hurdles of disbelief and doubt that the main character had to overcome and I very much enjoyed his journey. I recommend the novel to everyone, whether you are already a believer or firmly in the other camp!

Brussel Sprouts

To me, this book is was lot like experiencing eating Brussel Sprouts. I rarely have them. I've never made them.
I occasionally encounter them at a friend's house or some remote buffet. I eat them, wondering the entire time if I really like them as I chew away. Then go in for another and another until they're gone. That's how this quirky story unfolded for me. I wasn't so sure in the beginning if I liked the story, then did, then it took a twist and didn't care for it too much but hung in there until it was finished and decided I liked the story very much. The main character in this book, Will Alexander is a lot like Forrest Gump, only in the spiritual, new age world. In the beginning, he bumbles along, causing great changes in hap encounters and is seemingly unaware of his positive impact on people's dire health. It is very intelligently written. Andrew Himmel certainly has a very special gift himself - the gift of weaving words beautifully to tell a very interesting story that stays with you.
I'm still undecided on brussel sprouts but not on Andrew Himmel's book. I hope he writes another and soon. I wouldn't
care what the subject is. He knows how to tell a very entertaining story.

Without giving away the plot, i would say i loved this book for the following reasons:
1. the writer, Andrew Himmel has a dazzling intelligence which is always at his finger tips...
he is always ready to stand back and give a very interesting intellectual assessment of what is going on in his life.
Sometimes Himmel has a Woody Allen tinge to him. Take this observation when he first meets the woman of his dreams:
"i was becoming entwined against my will. How did i know this? Because for all the frustrations Erica caused me, I sensed that her absence would resurrect the void from which i had escaped." Could this not be the subject of an interesting psychology exploration of romance. Not your typical i am in love-and swept away but also not so incredibly unusual fear of commitment reaction. His acerbic wit is a large part of the fun of reading this book: "His description of a healer he meets for the first time, " he hardly looked like a dominating presence, but instead like an overgrown child told to stand still, with a pugnacity that lay one millimeter beneath the surface. An uncharitable description of his clothes would suggest that he was wearing pajamas". i loved these types observations.
As to the plot it was really a very fun romp though Himmel's' imagined (i assume) venture into healing. Again I can see how having met a healer he could have dozed off and dreamed the whole book.
If you are looking for a fun romp and are not too concerned with a realistic assessment of alternative healing, i suspect, you will love the book

A very happy happenstance to have stumbled over this book!

This is truly a remarkable book. Andrew Hummel is an excellent writer but he is also an attorney. I am not very interested in lawyers, or in the law much either, but Will the main character in The Reluctant Healer is. He is an active associate attorney in a very respectable firm in Manhattan. He is exceedingly competent, a credible litigator, grounded in the physical realm. His girlfriend, Emily, is almost his total opposite. She expresses everything in herself and all around her as having energy, even pretzels. They meet in an uptown bar. Will is entranced but fumbles badly for a pick-up line while Emily becomes enamored of the colors she sees radiated off of him, and so they begin their journey. The author states in Q & A after the book that "Existence requires something flammable to incinerate its boundaries." Never have a read a book with a better summary . Hummel also says "I feel in my gut that his (Will's) story needs to go forward.". I do too. So will you. Happy reading!
