Discovering the after-action report of his father's unit in World War II provided Scales with the verbal "map" that enabled him to accurately track his father's progress through France and Luxembourg after D-Day. Combining that vital information with his father's stories and wartime documents, his own comprehensive and hard-won military expertise, a mind for planning, and a spirit of adventure, Scales saw his way clear to set forth on his own campaign of tribute: "to reconstruct my father's path in Europe." This journey would be more meaningful, though, than merely traveling across the landscape of history and recounting wartime clashes. The author enlisted the participation and assistance of his children in the effort. As they honored the memory and service of one member of the family, they would also be creating unforgettable memories for their family as well, tying the generations together. This is one of the aspects of the book that I found unique and touching.
The graphics in this book are outstanding. Dozens and dozens of relevant photographs (historical and contemporary), military documents, and maps (that are clearly annotated) fill its pages. The ample documentation and Scales' narrative skills, that link and dramatize the elements of military history, personal history, and travelogue, give this journey a rich "you-are-there" quality, in past and present.
Funny stories enliven the author's tale.Read more ›
