After the death of Magdalena’s mother, her father, Dr. Allen, gives her a shocking ultimatum, forcing her to choose a husband or he will do it for her. With the aid of her best friend, Claire Clarke, she will leave Philadelphia and travel to Bareglen Creek, Texas and accept a temporary voluntary teaching job at the orphanage for three months.
“Father, this is barbaric! We are not living in the dark ages any longer, and I can’t believe you’re giving me this ultimatum.”
“Three months, Magdalena, you’ve got three months to find a husband and set a wedding date, or I’ll choose one for you.”
Nothing like trying to ignore a timeline than leaving home and working in an orphanage but it is exactly what she will do. Meeting Doctor Lance Holloway again will have her on edge because of his bossy ways. It must be a characteristic of doctors because he is acting as her father does.
The teaching position at the orphanage is pleasant until a group of Mexicans shows up, making threats, asking about a boy named Pablo, shooting Sister Theresa and knocking Magdalena around. There is a mystery around one of the orphans named Raphael, and she learns that she must help protect him. When the bandits return, provisions have been made to keep the children safe, but the adults are still in danger. Once again, it becomes a life and death situation.
The story has plenty of intense moments, danger, mystery and suspense. It also has more than one budding romance in the works, yet all the parties seem to skirt the emotions. Just when things seem to be working out between Lance and Magdalena, it will fall apart.
Magdalena’s time is coming to an end and she will either have to return to accept her fate under her father’s hands or try and find employment on her own. Will Lance and Magdalena find a way to work through their emotions or will she leave and return back to Philadelphia?
The story is a clean, sweet, historical based story with some Christian elements, but not preachy. It is a great addition to the Hero Hearts and Bareglen Creek series. The story does compliment Lawfully Charmed where many of the characters are also in this story.
This is the second Bareglen Creek book. It stands alone, but I must say, I’m glad I read Lawfully Charmed first and knew the other characters well. I’m really looking forward to the next book!
I received a complimentary copy of the book, which I voluntarily reviewed. I have given my honest opinion.
Magdalena left her home to teach at an orphanage. She grew to love the children she taught. The sisters who ran the orphanage grew to love and respect Magdalena too.
Lance Halloway the doctor took a shine to Magdalene and she fought him at every turn. What happens when bad men come for one of the children? What happens to the Nuns and Magdalena?
How does Lance respond? I highly recommend that you get this incredible book and read or listen to it yourself because I'm sure you will enjoy this story very much.
I absolutely loved it!

I loved this story! This is a standalone novella but I already knew most of the characters from Lawfully Charmed, and it was...Read more
