About the Author

Jez Strider (1983-Present) is a native of Tennessee. For as long as she can remember, reading has been a big part of her life, taking her out of a sometimes harsh reality to wonderful new worlds. When she was in high school, writing became more prevalent. She worked for three years on the newspaper staff as the Arts and Entertainment editor. After graduation and a few bumps in the road, she enrolled at Penn Foster College with a focus in freelance writing. It took several years before she realized she wanted to give writing a book a shot. In 2011, she was diagnosed with cancer. That fight and becoming a survivor gave her new insight and motivations toward her goals. With the realization that none of us are guaranteed tomorrow, she started work on that elusive book. Vampire's Eve is her first publication. Today, Jez still resides in Tennessee with her boyfriend, cat, and dog. She is currently working on her next book. Feel free to like Jez on Facebook. I don't normally leave comments but this time I had to. This contains spoilers.

I had problems with this book from the very beginning. The male protagonist started of as a a**hole and I spend 95% of the book hating him. I don't like the idea of using the wolf gene/pheromones as reasons to sleep together after not seeing each other for 17 years. To me if felt like she was agreeing to rape and that just completely turned me off the whole book. I skipped over each love scene because the first love scene made her seem pathetic and left a bad taste in my mouth. Also he started off by calling her an idiot, and when he threw the $1,000 at her to help move back to the village it felt more like he was purchasing a whore rather than trying to help out the mother of his child. Furthermore, I hated the fact that he justified his actions, rather than just apologizing he kept trying to explain away his actions. I was angry that he kept blaming her and saying if she'd never left him or the pack everything would have been fine. Mara did stand up to herself but there was too much inconsistency that in the end I still felt like she acted more like a doormat and did whatever he wanted, like moving back and mating with him. I understand that the whole thing was a huge misunderstanding perpetrated by the bad guy, and it ruined both of their lives but it's just that Kaden came out as such a bad guy in the beginning that I found it difficult to like him even when he started to make the transition into a better man/wolf. To me the damage had been done and I would have preferred if she'd ended up with Taylor.

I can honestly say this is one of the worst attempts at a lycan story I have read. A man who broke her heart, left her with nowhere to run, and whom she has not seen in 17 years suddenly appears and she falls right in with his plans? Goes back to his home and moves right in? Ridiculous. The author makes the heroine seem like this strong, fully-independent woman who has been working multiple jobs and raising her son alone his entire life, yet the minute the heartbreaker shows up she turns into a mess of 'Oh, I love you, Oh yes, yell at me some more, boss me because I like it." Where did her spine go, her independent attitude? If I could, I would ask for my money back. If you are a lover of the lycan genre and are looking for a delightful new story, keep searching because you will not find it here.

I liked the premise. Couple long estranged, werewolves, young man on the cusp of a big change... What was lacking was the execution of the plot. And, to be quite frank, the complete lack of groveling or change on the part of the Alpha. The man had sex with another woman the night before what would have amounted to a marriage with the heroine. The reasons are irrelevant. The pregnant heroine, heartbroken, leaves town and spends the next 17 years raising her son on her own, completely cut off from her adopted family and the Hero. He does not even TRY to find her for two years and does not make actual contact at all until their son is essentially a man. I found the quick forgiveness by both mother and son of the Hero's total abandonment of his woman and child for close to 20 years very odd. His hurt "pride" is the only excuse? Not good enough. No sincere apology for the "Hero's" actions- or lack thereof. As a reader, I just could not enjoy reading about a man who let the mother of his child suffer for the child's entire life. The mom and boy live in poverty, no child support checks. The "Hero" pretends the "love" of his life and their kid never existed and tries to obtain a new mate during all the years they are apart. The ONLY reason he is not "bonded" to another woman is because none of the pack ladies would have him! When confronted with the action of sleeping with another woman on the night before when he was to be formally bonded, he COMPLAINS that the heroine made too much out of "meaningless sex" with another?!! Yet, he wants to kill someone who cooks the heroine a meal and gives her a flower. Talk about ick factor. The Alpha never made up for what he did, I couldn't buy into the "happy" ending. Sigh.

I'll say right out - I enjoyed this book. In a sentence - she's mated to the alpha, she gets pregnant, he cheats on her, she runs away to New York and lives in abject poverty, has a boy, tells him his father is dead...and never quite gets around to telling him that boys have their first shift on the first full moon right after their 18th birthday. And he's around 17 and 10 months. Surprise!

I'm spoiling nothing. You find this out in the first 20 pages. Of course the alpha comes back into the picture, they must fall back in love, there's an evil villain or two lurking about, and a lot of people howl. Predictable, but written in such a way that it all seems like you haven't read it before. I liked the 3 MCs (bordering on 4). While it ends exactly the way you expect it to, I wouldn't mind another book. Perhaps a certain human photographer and the sweet young she-wolf...I mean, girl? Not so subtle hint...

My only criticism is that there was telling and no showing about the MCs relationship as teens. I would have liked to have seen some flashbacks, perhaps. The book wasn't long, so it wouldn't be overdoing it. But, all in all, one of the better shifter books I've read this year. I like this author.
