I had problems with this book from the very beginning. The male protagonist started of as a a**hole and I spend 95% of the book hating him. I don't like the idea of using the wolf gene/pheromones as reasons to sleep together after not seeing each other for 17 years. To me if felt like she was agreeing to rape and that just completely turned me off the whole book. I skipped over each love scene because the first love scene made her seem pathetic and left a bad taste in my mouth. Also he started off by calling her an idiot, and when he threw the $1,000 at her to help move back to the village it felt more like he was purchasing a whore rather than trying to help out the mother of his child. Furthermore, I hated the fact that he justified his actions, rather than just apologizing he kept trying to explain away his actions. I was angry that he kept blaming her and saying if she'd never left him or the pack everything would have been fine. Mara did stand up to herself but there was too much inconsistency that in the end I still felt like she acted more like a doormat and did whatever he wanted, like moving back and mating with him. I understand that the whole thing was a huge misunderstanding perpetrated by the bad guy, and it ruined both of their lives but it's just that Kaden came out as such a bad guy in the beginning that I found it difficult to like him even when he started to make the transition into a better man/wolf. To me the damage had been done and I would have preferred if she'd ended up with Taylor.
I'm spoiling nothing. You find this out in the first 20 pages. Of course the alpha comes back into the picture, they must fall back in love, there's an evil villain or two lurking about, and a lot of people howl. Predictable, but written in such a way that it all seems like you haven't read it before. I liked the 3 MCs (bordering on 4). While it ends exactly the way you expect it to, I wouldn't mind another book. Perhaps a certain human photographer and the sweet young she-wolf...I mean, girl? Not so subtle hint...
My only criticism is that there was telling and no showing about the MCs relationship as teens. I would have liked to have seen some flashbacks, perhaps. The book wasn't long, so it wouldn't be overdoing it. But, all in all, one of the better shifter books I've read this year. I like this author.

Good writing and good characters. Mara and Kaden make good lead characters and secondary characters (like Taylor) are amusing. Being a novella the story is a bit rushed. Read morePublished 5 months ago by ACOOK
The characters were well developed and the writing was easy to read, but the story was very flat. I kept hoping for more. Overall, it was just okay. Read morePublished 5 months ago by Fashion Forward
This story had me going. I didn't think she would go home and I could have sworn the other beta was taking people. Hmmm. Good turn out it in the end. Read morePublished 5 months ago by Siriniti a Kidd
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes shifter tales! Original alpha and his mate story, but includes the whole pack as it should.Published 6 months ago by Cathy Rabuck
Story was good. Author should have second thought some of her words and phrases. There were a lot of typos or misspellingsPublished 12 months ago by Amazon Customer
Alright read. I love fantasy/supernatural romance, but this seemed to fall short for me. A couple of the characters seemed out of place. Read morePublished 13 months ago by Sarah Swartzenberg
