Remain True: Amana
A story of heartbreak, hope, and the importance of friendship, family, and true love.
While searching Amana giftshops for writing inspiration, Tim sees a beautiful young woman and falls in love at first sight. Never mind she is gazing at him from a photograph. His love affair intensifies when he takes her home, and her image shimmers like a mirage.
Oma Zuber, his mysterious neighbor woman, invites Tim and his sidekick, a pug named Chimichanga, over for tea. Oma’s magical gift of storytelling pulls on Tim’s heart as much as the photograph. Reality begins to break up around the edges—what part of reality will Remain True?

About the author

Thomas Nye, author of the beloved Amish Horses Series, writes Christian romance novels with a historical flare and a touch of humor.
During grade school, Thomas developed an interest in history by reading anything he could find about horses and early American history. As a teenager, he moved to an area with a large Amish population, and it was as if he had fallen into his favorite book. His love of farm life, history, and horses all came together in real-life experiences with his Amish friends, who also happen to share his Christian faith. Thomas purchased draft horses from Amish farmers in his neighborhood and set out to learn the art of working with horses in harness. After years of buying, selling, and trading workhorses with Amish farmers in his community, Thomas had many wonderful memories of those experiences. The Amish Horses Book Series is a set of novels based on those adventures. Under the Heavens (Book I) was published in December 2013. He followed with Catbird Singing (Book II) 2015, English River (Book III) 2016; his other novels include Samson and Amish Delilah 2019, and Remain True: Amana 2023.
Thomas also has two published novellas, Whispering to Horses 2015 and Amish Park 2017. He has contributed to numerous anthology books as well. His blog, amishhorses.blogspot.com has attracted worldwide attention as a source of information about Amish life and also serves as his website to keep readers informed about his current works. The blog highlights draft horses and a glimpse of Thomas' experiences on the edge of an Amish community.
Thomas and his wife, Shari, live in Eastern Iowa on an acreage her grandparents purchased in 1918. They have 5 grown children and 9 grandchildren.

Timothy is our lead character who has moved to a small town in Iowa during the pandemic. He faces the loss of a relationship and hopes to start over in this new place. The people he meets are quirky, friendly or sometimes mysterious. His dog is a hit with everyone which draws people to Timothy.
I loved that this is a dual time line story as the author transports readers back to a place where a simpler way of live existed. I loved how the author is very descriptive as I could see the story unfold of who used to live in Timothy’s home. I didn’t expect to be emotional right away as an unexpected tragedy occurred. We learn of the Amanda traditions such as when someone dies, the relatives walk behind the horse and wagon where the body has been placed . It seemed like forever as the procession went on for a long time.
I adored the older woman who told Timothy the story of the history of his home. It was like walking back in time as we heard a gentle voice direct us to each new part of the story. Oma has a sweet spirit around her and I began to become invested in Blondie as she grieved the loss of her baby sister.
There are many interesting characters that make this story nice to read. Chuckles is funny and would be someone I would love to meet. He is one of those people who never met a stranger. He has a bigger than life personality and a big heart. Oh my Blondie is definitely my favorite character. Her contagious curiosity gets her into adventures and I loved being a shadow in her life. The joy of being a child was so perfectly portrayed by the author. I can’t wait to see where her story would go.
I did think it was a great idea for Tim to use Blondie’s story to make into a book. The problem is I don’t think everyone was excited about his manuscript. The lessons from Blondie’s story is emotional at times. I liked when Tim asked Oma why she was telling him about a romance between two eight year olds. Her response was, “ Children’s emotions are every bit as real as adults.” I wonder how many times we have ignored the feeling a child expresses?” That rejection can have some unsettling consequences if we don’t acknowledge that they are important and we understand how they feel.
The story has a great faith thread and I loved when this was said; “You must always be true to who you are and what you believe, no matter what others do to you or what they say.” This is such a powerful statement that I had to write it down in my journal. We need to stop worrying about what others think of us, and turn to God and trust Him with everything.
There is so much I want to share but I need to stop here. Readers, this story is one that touches on some sensitive subjects, but the author does it in a way where God is there to comfort and redeem those who need it. The ending is wonderful and reminds us that, “God made a way to bring restoration and healing.”
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
The setting of the book is 2020 in Amana, Iowa. Timothy Hayes has moved to Amana Colonies in IA to start life anew after a recent divorce. He moved in the midst of the Pandemic and he finds he isn't able to find alone time as his neighbors are super friendly. Walking his dog is about the most Socialization he gets from the Neighborhood Children, from annoying men in the neighborhood, and storytelling old women. There are also some women trying to "match make" for Tim and he does acknowledge that there are a couple of women who catch his eye. One Old Woman, Oma Zuber, in particular is a GREAT Storyteller and Tim is transported back to the time of the Stories told by the woman.
I have to say it took a couple of chapters to really get into the Storyline. I was overwhelmed at first with all the mentions of the Pandemic and mask wearing. Once we got past much of that, I was able to enjoy the book. I really enjoyed reading about Tim's neighbors and how different they all were. He seemed annoyed by many of them, but he also seemed to change his attitude after a bit. Oma Zuber was my favorite character. Her story telling really was unique and she enjoyed talking to Tim. Tim even seemed intrigued by her stories and the way he felt he was there in the time of the story, and I actually did also. I also enjoyed the theme of the story which is "God will always be with us and Remain True". I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys Christian Fiction. WONDERFUL BOOK!
Spending part of my childhood near Cedar Rapids, the Amana Colonies were a family trip or school field trip destination. So, discovering Remain True: Amana by Thomas Nye was an automatic draw for me, as well as the fact it is a dual timeline.
Tim, a young, divorced writer has retreated to the rural Amana Colonies (Main Amana to be exact) to lick his wounds and try to re-ignite his life as a writer.
Tim’s annoyance at his neighbors’ friendliness (and possibly over-interest in his life) annoys me. I am thankful that Linda pushes him to help the neighbor children out, when he might choose to ignore them! They are adorable, and a dog like Chimichanga would easily capture their attention and curiosity!
Oma is a little more formidable. Tim handled her better than I might. One part friendly and two parts gruff, her storytelling ability is superb as she relates the “history” of Tim’s house. When Tim questions Oma’s stories being about people not individuals, Oma has a ready answer. “I thought you were going to tell me stories about my cottage.” Oma frowned at him. “A home is defined by those who live there.”
Eventually, like Tim, one falls in love with this old woman who has seen so much life.
One part of life portrayed heavily in the story is COVID. The constant mention of the disease, masking, social distancing, etc, made me uneasy. While I’m not sure ignoring it in literature is the way to go, so many people suffered so much. One needs to at least know this is a possible trigger in the book.
Nye does an incredible job of tying everything and everybody together by the end. A few stereotypes were involved, but there were also some surprises that were fun to uncover. Overall, a fun book with a bit of history in the setting.
