Beginning with a concise introduction, the first part of the book is dedicated to the primary biblical texts pertaining to divorce and remarriage, and the second part is an examination of the teaching and practice prevalent in the early Church. In neither of these cases, biblical or patristic, do these scholars find support for the kind of "toleration" of civil marriages following divorce advocated by Cardinal Kasper.

This is as a good an introduction to the topic of what the Catholic Church teaches about the nature of marriage as one is likely to encounter, given the confusion that currently surrounds it. The book has chapters on the Biblical, patristic and medieval evidence for the Church's teachings on the indissolubility of marriage, as well as chapters on the ontological and canonical (canon law) issues involved with the connection between the eucharist and the indissolubility of marital unions. The essays do a good job of explaining why Cardinal Kasper's proposals to admit remarried couples to the sacraments are flawed. The chapter on the practice of the Orthodox practice of second marriages is especially illuminating, given how often those who wish the Catholic Church to do so advert to such practices. The book is probably best suited for people who are academics or who have studied theology, but I believe could benefit anyone who truly wanted to understand why the church teaches what it teaches.

Slow reading but the material needs to be taken in carefully and considered fully. More concrete examples of real pragmatic situations will be needed for laymen to get a true sense of how the pastoral and the doctrinal are to be reconciled. Now I have the background from this vantage point. Might have to read Kasper's Mercy to get the full scope of his position. Worth the read and serves as a solid reference.

I recommend this book to anybody interested in understanding why the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is indissoluble, and why she has to be coherent with her teachings on this difficult and sometimes unpopular subject. Although I had read a lot about Church's doctrine on marriage (Thomas Aquinas, John Paul II, the Catechism, etc.), and was familiar with the main philosophical and biblical arguments, I found in each chapter of this book something new to learn.

In the first chapter of Remaining in the Truth of Christ: Marriage and Communion in the Catholic Church, editor Robert Dodaro, OSA, explains:
*"The essays in this volume represent the responses of five Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church and four other scholars to the book The Gospel of the Family, published earlier this year by Walter Cardinal Kasper....This book challenges the premiss that traditional Catholic doctrine and contemporary pastoral practice are in contradiction....The authors of this volume jointly contend that the New Testament presents Christ as unambiguously prohibiting divorce and remarriage on the basis of God's original plan for marriage set out at Genesis 1:27 and 2:24....God's mercy does not dispense us from following His commandments."

This collection meticulously engages arguments favoring a de-emphasis on indissolubility, many of which are tantamount to citing historical anomalies as supposed proofs. Yet until the final chapter, I had a nagging feeling that there was an elephant in the room going overlooked. Cardinal Burke not only sees the proverbial elephant, but he takes it by the tusks - alerting us to the need for vigilance against INVALID declarations of marital nullity, which absolutely benefit no one.

This magnificent work should be part of a library on marriage in every parish, which would also include:
* Addresses of the Holy Fathers to the Roman Rota
* Arcanum
*

If you want to understand what's happening behind the news headlines of the Synod, read this book. The best short guide to the distinctly Catholic view of marriage, its scriptural basis, the early history of marriage in the Church, and the difference between East and West on marriage.
