The Remains of the Day 30th Anniversary (4K Ultra HD + Digital)

Remains of the Day

The possibility of romance and his master's ties with the Germans cause challenge a rulebound head butler's carefully maintained veneer of servitude.

Nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress, The Remains of the Day stars Anthony Hopkins as English butler Stevens, who has devoted 30 years to his master, Lord Darlington, at Darlington Hall in post-WWI Britain. Prizing discretion and service above all, Stevens realizes as he looks back on his life that his unquestioning faith in Lord Darlington has cost him dearly. Engrossed in orchestrating his employer's grand banquets, receptions and conferences — which turn out to involve a pact with the Germans — he was forced to neglect his dying father and denied his feelings for the attractive young housekeeper, Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson). Based on the Booker Award-winning novel by Kazuo Ishiguro and developed by the Ivory/Merchant/Jhabvala team (A Room with a View, Howards End), this endearing story evolves into a profound and moving study of personality, class and culture.

  • The acclaimed modern classic debuts on 4K Ultra HD, celebrating its 30th anniversary
  • Feature presented with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, as well as 5.1 and 2-channel surround audio

This is one of my all-time favorite movies - a gem, a triumph. Top notch in every way. It should have garnered several Oscars, but perhaps because Hopkins and Thompson both won Oscars for Howards End the previous year, they decided to give the awards to others. Remains of the Day is way more profound and touching than Howards End. I'm not sure how to describe my perceptions adequately, but I could really empathize with the human emotions portrayed by the two protagonists. This edition comes with extensive commentaries, as special features. You get to see what Anthony Hopkins actually looks like. His hair is a lighter brown, but his eyes are still as intense as always.

It was exactly 5 years ago today, when I purchased this movie (DVD). I still watch it at least once a year, and love it every bit as much. Since then, I read the book by the same title, by Kazuo Ishiguro, which inspired the movie. In a departure from conventional wisdom, I have to admit that the screenplay blows the book away. The book was written in the "first person", almost entirely from the perspective of the butler (Mr. Stevens, Jr.); basically his fictional memoir - diary-like. Other characters seen in the movie are barely mentioned, if at all. It's all about his perceptions and his ethic of being a great butler. It is to the tremendous credit to both Ruth Prawer Jhabvala (screenwriter) and James Ivory (director) who brought this story to life on screen. The screen adaptation is deep and profound, and all the characters are portrayed with stunning perfection. The ending is especially emotional for me, for I'm at that age when I can look back, with no small amount of regret, at all the mistakes and failures of my earlier years. To watch Mr. Stevens and Miss Kenton, 20 years later, approaching their retirement years, reminiscing about the "good old days" at Darlington, never fails to bring tears to my eyes.

The great Merchant-Ivory production team, including Ruth Prawer Jhabvala who wrote most of their scripts had already made many good films for a decade before hitting their prime from A Room With a View (1985) to The Remains of the Day (1993) with only one misstep, the unfortunate Slaves of New York (1989). This film along with its immediate predecessor, Howard's End (1992) was their absolute peak. Both films teamed Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, a major reason for the success of both. Rarely have two actors seemed to be so perfectly in tune with each other.

The Remains of the Day was the more challenging of the two. Howard's End was a more plot-driven film in which the characters are seemingly driven by an inexorable fate. This film was entirely character-driven and in the wrong hands could have been a crushing bore. As much depends upon what the actors are signalling is going on beneath the surface as anything in the dialog or action. In the hands of Hopkins and Thompson that is a lot. Contrasts of personalities, issues of loyalty, episodes within the household staff, world events and the possibility of romance all intermingle in the daily life of Darlington Hall in the space between the two World Wars. The events are set in action by the arrival of Miss Kenton (Thompson) as the new Housekeeper where Mr. Stevens (Hopkins) is the Head Butler and runs a very tight ship. It might be helpful to add that these were very important positions in the running of a Great Estate and they should be understood as having positions of management and not simply as servants. The story is told as a flashback by Stevens, who is on a motor trip to see Miss Kenton for the first time in years. Will their reunion produce something new for both of them?

Everything about this film is perfect, from the sets and cinematography and editing. Especially noteworthy is Richard Robbin's infinitely complex score, indicating as it does the great deal that goes on beneath the surface of even formal human relationships. Although tinged with sadness and lost opportunity, there is also a great deal of humor in this film and drama amid the understatement. A complete success from beginning to end by one of the great moviemaking teams in recent decades.

Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins - that's really all that needs to be said. Movie adaptations of books often fall short but that isn't the case here, the film is fantastic and does Kazuo Ishiguro's novel justice.
