The main character is a robot called Max Guy. His older brother/dad/guardian/I don't know what Cardigan is a man with a robot head. Some of Max guy's other friends include a boy who is always sick, a kid made out of Magma, a lady with drills for hands, and a robot baby who tricks women into taking care of him. The city that they live in is filled with lots of cool things like (more) robots, dinosaurs, power rangers, and talking ducks. Basically, if you knocked over a kid's toy box, you'd basically have the cast of Remake.
The humor is really great in this series. I think fans of things like Adventure Time and Futurama will really enjoy it. Remake is not a copy of these franchises, but it utilizes the same absurd humor that both of these series possess. Bizarre situations and characters abound and the dialogue is intentionally awkward, weird and somewhat childlike. It's just nuts.
From what I've gathered, this is the first book in the series, and it kind of shows as the story progresses. At no point in reading this book did I ever dislike it, but the quality of the writing, art and creativity of the humor increases dramatically between the first page and the last page of the comic. I brought this volume along with Remake 3xtra (also would recommend), and it seems like the overall tone of the series is best represented by the last few stories in this book.
I think this is a book that both kids and adults can get behind, however, I don't feel like this is something that very young kids should be looking at. The humor is whacky and the characters are cute, but there are a lot of really casual and violent deaths that happen. 13 year old me would be fine with that but 6 year old me might have found it somewhat upsetting. I don't raise kids but these are my feelings on the matter.
Overall, this is a great book. Would read again and even a third or forth time.
Lamar Abrams delivers a constant flow of laughter with Remake. His characters play off of each other's quirks and dry, absurd humor styles. The book itself is a very attractive example of print comics with a variety of line styles by Abrams and beautiful gray toning.
On a rating scale of 1 to 10 robot laughs, I give Lamar Abram's Remake 10 ROBOT LAUGHS! Get your copy today!
