After enduring Nazi imprisonment and losing most of her family during the Holocaust, Noemi Ban was slowly recovering from her traumatic past – until the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Terrified by a resurgence of Nazi sentiment, and the increased tyranny of the Soviet regime, Noemi summoned her courage and guided her husband and young sons through a successful escape into Austria.

Welcomed into the United States as a refugee, Noemi navigated the complexities of life as an immigrant and returned to her teaching career, yet remained silent about her experiences as a Nazi prisoner. At the age of seventy-three, inspired by a speech given by fellow Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace prize winner Elie Wiezel, Noemi returned to Auschwitz-Birkenau to confront her haunting memories and honor her loved ones. She then dedicated the next three decades to sharing her story, capturing the hearts of tens of thousands of students and community members throughout the United States and beyond.

About the Author

Diane M. Sue received her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, worked as a school psychologist and school counselor for almost thirty years, and has periodically taught adjunct courses in the education and psychology departments at Western Washington University. Diane has been recognized for her professional and volunteer work with children and families, receiving the Washington State School Psychologist of the Year Award and the Western Washington University College of Education Professional Excellence Award. Diane, born in Virginia but raised in California, enjoys her cross-national work conducting conscious aging workshops and her connection with the Humanity Rising global community and with the Center for Spiritual Living. She remains very involved with climate justice work in the Pacific Northwest.Diane first met Noémi in the early 1990s. Diane and Noémi developed a close and lasting friendship, in part because of their common love of teaching and their belief in educating students about kindness, compassion, and resilience. The complete story of Holocaust survivor Noemi Ban has been deftly captured by author Diane Sue in this compelling and remarkable book. Noemi worked tirelessly in the last decades of her life to bring her story to as many people as possible. She spoke at schools, community organizations, churches, governmental agencies, and wherever she was given the opportunity. She was also well aware that her time was limited and wanted her testimony to outlive her physical life. In her work on the preparation of this book prior to her death, she has accomplished that goal admirably. Her message of acceptance and love continues to resonate. Noemi's story is more than that of a Holocaust survivor, though, she was also the architect of her family's escape from Communist Hungary to the USA during the Cold War, and more. The attached photo captures the incredible spirit of Noemi Ban and was taken at Multnomah Falls near Portland, Oregon, after one of her speaking engagements. Even though she's now gone, Noemi remains an inspiring figure - and her strong voice now lives on. This book is highly recommended.

Noemi Ban was instrumental in ensuring that the Holocaust not be forgotten. Each year she shared her experiences with thousands of students. She went beyond speaking about the tragedy of the past and translated the sorrow of the loss of her family into action. She was a passionate advocate for civil rights, diversity and social justice. It is OUR duty as human beings, to honor her legacy and keep teaching about the Holocaust so that it never happens again. Through this book, we learn more about her philosophy of life and her mission to teach about the Holocaust. Her story and the many others like it must be told and re-told for generations to come. Her message of love and acceptance, of tolerance and compassion inspires us to appreciate and LOVE life. It is through this appreciation that we find the strength to make positive change in the world.

Diane Sue masterfully tells Noemi's story in such a way that you feel that you are living it with her. I really appreciated the short chapters that really helped keep the reader engaged. I could not put the book down. I am grateful to Diane for preserving just one of the many many stories from the Holocaust that must never be forgotten.

Amazing Life Story, (a page turner)

This was a really well written first hand account of the most amazing life of a holocaust survivor that is a book that's hard to put down. It begins with her family life in Hungary, then at just 20 years old when she and her family endured the horrors of the Nazis when they were taken from their home to the camps in Germany. I could emphasize and feel the indignities she was subjected too and the horrors of the camps. We feel the relief when she escaped and eventually returned to Hungary after the war to start her own family, only to be subjected to communist rule. Then detailing 2 escape attempts in 1956 from Hungary with her family and eventual arrival to America as an immigrant not knowing English and their persistence and pride to work to survive and eventually return to teaching in America. There were great incites into life as a immigrant. As I read the detailed accounts of her life and specifically her will to survive and succeed, it is inspiring. I highly recommend this also for a review into history with this first hand account.

This book is a first-hand account of the life Ms. Noemi Ban, a holocaust survivor and refugee from Communist Hungary to the United States, and her life here as an elementary school teacher and, later in her life, teacher-activist, communicating about the horrors of the Holocaust and warning us about hate, but also hate of hate, and as mother and caregiver for her husband during his last years. Her deep reflections about these experiences and of her own aging -how she dealt with trauma, pain, and fragility at different points- is worthy of one and a thousand memoirs. It is a remarkable story of a remarkable woman, not only because of her perseverance and resilience but also because she was not afraid to laid her vulnerability bare in her reflections.

We need all of the Noémi Bans the world can muster. I have learned much from her life and hope to honor her memory and that of the so many others like her in small (or large) acts of bravery.
