Reviewed for For Whom The Books Toll
5 stars, Hot
Man by day, Centaur by night, Rhycious is a remedy maker who needs his own healing.
He's the royal physician, famous for his cures. War and post traumatic stress disorder has broken his spirit, preventing him from finding true happiness. Then a direct order from the queen to investigate an uprising forces him out of his secluded cabin at the edge of the forest.
Patience is an optimistic, good-natured Wood Nymph who works as a mediator to ensure harmony within the Nymph sector.
Environmental pollution in the aquifer stream that feeds the taproot tree of her heart is slowly killing her. Resigned to the fact she will not live long, she sets out to discover the mysterious disappearance of her sister. Experience has taught her to deny herself the love of a male, but the gruff Centaur is different. He doesn't push his expectations on her, only his healing nature.
When Rhycious loses his grip on reality, he believes his inability to control his disorder will drive Patience away. Nevertheless, desire flares, and Patience draws him close. Kidnapping and betrayal turn their mythic joint venture into a deadly bout.
Will their love endure when survival hinges on trusting each other?
My review:
Wow!!! I'm still reeling after finishing Remedy Maker by Sheri Fredricks. The world building is excellent and the characters are well suited to live there. The characters are wonderfully written with real life problems. The story is fast paced and drew me in right from page 1. Ms. Fredricks has made sure to include a lot of detail that only adds to the allure of the story. A lot of emotions, depth and dimension shape all of the characters into people. There were times I almost forgot I was reading about creatures that don't actually exist.
Rhycious believes he's too damaged to be happy with a family. The long war with the Wood Nymphs has taken it's toll. Rhy is also a Remedy Maker and is very good at what he does. When his friend Samuel, brings him an unconscious woman, Rhy is stumped as to what's causing it. When he examines her and finds out she's a Wood Nymph, he's immediately angry, and his PTSD kicks in.
Rhycious is super yummy, sexy, smart and an excellent remedy maker. I really liked him, he also has some wit with his dealings with other characters of the book. One of my all time favorite mythological beings is a Centaur. I've always just liked the idea of them.
Patience is searching for her missing sister, Serenity. Patience is cute as a button, dresses snappily, and has a special way of talking that confuses the heck out of Rhy. She knows she's ill, unfortunately just not what is causing it, so she's never let herself believe she has a future with a family. Patience's favorite name for Rhy is Stud Muffin and I laughed every time I read it. She just has a bubbly personality.
Ms. Fredricks infuses a lot of adventure, danger, plot twists and turns and a few surprises that are just delicious. There is also a plot to get Queen Savella, ruler of the Centaurs off the throne which only adds to the complexity of the story line.
I totally loved this book and recommend it to anyone who likes adventure, romance, lots of characters, surprises, and a little mystery in their books. You'll love it!!
From the very beginning I was intrigued by Rhycious, the centaur man who is suffering from PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, who while physically strong has a softer side, which is usually brought out by his patients. He is THE Remedy Maker, or essentially a doctor, to his people, the centaurs. This portrayal of centaurs was new and invigorating, as they switch back and forth between human form and true centaur form daily, which like I said is a new twist for me. I loved it, as Rhycious has to excuse himself periodically to make the change.
While Rhycious wrestles his demons, that are a result of a war with the Wood Nymphs, we meet Patience, a relatively young Wood Nymph who has been injured and brought to Rhycious. While he struggles to deal with his issues, his healer side refuses to ignore that she needs treatment. Rhycious eventually moves past his anger with her kind, and begins to fall in love with the wise-cracking Wood Nymph. Together, they are drawn into a web of lies and corruption that threatens to rip their world apart. Someone is conspiring to kill the centaur queen and it is up to Rhycious and Patience to uncover the plot and its participants before war again comes to their land.
As they investigate the deception, they gradually fall in love with each other. Now let me tell you, their love burns hotter than a fire, and nearly made me blush. But you can tell that there is nothing sinister in what they feel for each other. I think we all know what it is to have a new lover, whether we married them or traipse through one after the other. Patience and Rhycious exhibit this total focus on each other throughout the tale, and come out stronger for all that they have faced. When I finally reached the end of the book, I found myself hoping that all would work out between them. The two main characters may capture your attention, but all of the characters in this book draw you further into the tale, and left me wondering what would happen to them in the end.
There are so many things that I could say about this novel, but if I did then there would be very little reason for anyone to go out and purchase it. I hope that I see more of Patience and Rhycious in subsequent novels, and cannot wait until Sheri's next novel is released. She has gotten me hooked!
Ms. Fredricks really has a way with words. Her description and imagery are so fantastically amazing, it's hard to believe this is the first book she's written. We follow the story between two species, Wood Nymph and Centaur, that had been at war long ago. Our hero has PTSD and for me, I honestly can say I love a tortured man. One who has to fight to overcome his own inner emotional and mental demons. Rhycious, the Remedy Maker(love that name) is just the right kind of "mentalicious" and "sexy to the izzle" that makes me want to fake sick so he can heal me.
Patience, our lovely, albeit verbally eccentric heroine just brings a smile to my face every time I read her parts. The author does a pretty groovy job at making the nymph as distinct and lovable as anyone who talks in such odd ways can be loved. Reminded me of a good friend of mine in fact. I enjoyed that she had a psych background (I'm biased because I do too) and was the focus of calm that the hero needed.
I don't want to give away too much more, but know that between the main and side characters, there is nothing left out thanks to the love Ms. Fredricks put into this story. Readers will not be disappointed. There is romance, sexy as hell moments, action, humor, and twists that will keep you reading into the wee hours of the night.
5 stars from me, that's for darn sure! Kudos and congrats to the author and I can't wait to read more of her work in the future.
