Product Description
Neo-Paris. 2084.Personal memories can now be digitized, bought, sold and traded. The last remnants of privacy and intimacy have been swept away in what appears to be a logical progression of the explosive growth of social networks at the beginning of the 21st century. The citizens themselves have accepted this surveillance society in exchange for the comfort only smart technology can provide. This memory economy gives immense power over society to just a handful of people.Remember Me is a 3rd person action adventure where players take on the role of Nilin, a former elite memory hunter with the ability to break into people's minds and steal or even alter their memories. The authorities, fearful of her knowledge and capabilities have arrested Nilin and wiped her memory clean. After her escape from prison, Nilin sets out on a mission to recover her identity, helped by her last and only friend. This search for her past leads to her being hunted by the very people that created this surveillance society.

The level design is linear, and you'll soon find yourself frustrated by the fact that elements that you should be able to climb (fences, railings) can't be. You can jump at fences and find yourself merely moving up and down. This game could have benefited from a sandbox approach like Infamous, or at least some sort of mini-sandbox. There should have been opportunities to explore Paris beyond moving down paths and hoping to luck into secret, explorable areas. To the games credit, they do provide you with little orange guides that indicate a path forward. I just would have preferred being able to choose my own way through some more open sections. Maybe go swimming in the Seine.
The combat mechanic is serviceable, although it took me a little while to figure out what they meant by pressens (that's my bad, really, it just means button options). You can set your own combos, unlock more, and the game is forgiving enough to give you combos that restore health. Whether or not it's realistic, it's really handy, especially for players who are new to games. I wasn't pleased by some of their enemy choices. Early on in the game you are introduced to an enemy type that has been profoundly mentally disabled by virtue of the memory mechanics of the game. I don't like the way many games use mentally ill people for their villains, given that someone with a mental illness is far more likely to be offended against than be an offender themselves. They do tie into the memory mechanic, but it's a lazy choice (it's been done before in games like Borderlands). See the tvtropes page on "Insane equals Violent" to get an idea of the prevalence of the trend. I was initially expecting an inversion of that trope from the manner of the introduction of the enemy, and I feel that would have provided a lot more pathos to the characters. They do still tug at your heart strings, but they also buy into something much uglier.
There are also quicktime events. I tend to stuff those up, but I think most people are used to them now.
The secondary game mechanic, and the most novel one, is memory alteration. It's pretty fun, but it's also slow. You play through, rewind and edit a movie by focusing on pre-determined glitches. I tended not to go for obvious solutions right away because one of the ways you can lose is by killing the person remembering things. Yes, you lose, but it's narratively interesting. You are limited in the avenues you can explore, but the memory edit mechanic is still a great idea. This novelty is one of the games strengths, and it helps even out the weakness of the parkour sections (also fun but simple and not as well-implemented as Infamous).
The story is worth the view, although I do wish that some of the ethical implications had been treated with more horror from the protagonist. In a way it makes sense, it is the only world she knows, but I assume players will be more upset by the ideas the writers want to get across. It would've been nice to experience some of that with the protagonist, as opposed to around her. Still, speculative Scifi of this scope, with such an interesting set of mechanics, hasn't been seen in video games for a long time. The characters are diverse in personality, accent, body language and appearance (characters have imperfect teeth and scars, if they've had a tough life), giving a real sense of the melting pot the setting is. They feel like people, and you want to follow their conflicts and successes to the end. The writers did a brilliant job, and their work is well supported by the game's design and sound choices. The use of audio-visual advertisements throughout the game helps get across information in an organic way, although they tend to rely too much on exposition at the beginning of each chapter. I understand why, since it allows for focus on the meat of the story. They did a good job with keeping the plot unpredictable, but still comprehensible. I wholeheartedly recommend Remember Me. It says good things about the future of narrative in games.
If had to I'd give it a 8-5 to 8-7 if there was a story graph above on this rating thing. I say 8ish because it is a bit of a obvious scifi title and the story is a bit deep ya kinda have to be open to sci fi in general to really appreciate i as such I've graded accordingly so that linear, fighting gamers will know what they get into when considering it. The combo building is a bit blah at first but i really liked it and as someone who loves remember combos as it makes me feel like im learning stuff mid-gameplay amount my own memory skills. As a fan of the open world genre of games it IS a bummer that i cant do that here. The fighting combo remembering makes me remember how Sleeping Dogs caught me by surprise as a great game as well. I feel like a bad-A$$ beating people up as Nilin
Sounds are just top notch, the voice acting is about at English dub anime levels where they sound they could fit the character well but a part of you thinks they could have played it a little less or in some cases a bit more dramatic. Nilin's actress is top notch i will say. Now the game sounds are also great i often play with headphones to not to annoy a tenant i share a wall with and i was thoroughly enthralled with the game and fully immersed.
Now lasting appeal does get an 8 as that its about an 8 hour campaign that once again is very straight forward. But the game is still a great addition to my collection and i will have something to trophy hunt on till i get The Last Of Us in 10 days. The graphics are beautiful and i didn't notice many graphics bugs and if there were any they certainly didn't catch my eye or ruin the game.
Now full-disclosure I WAS spurred to do this because the so many reviews about this(IGN specificly god how i dislike them) were just so unfair so it may be closer to a 4 to 4 and a half but there are no halves and even 4 seemed like a dumbed down score. Honestly i preordered this read reviews last and was like OH GOD I made I HUGE mistake. Then i got it today, started playing it and had NO clue why this was was happening the game is so good and so great. The reviews had me believing that it was horrid filth with its bads far outweighing the good and thats just not true. All and all I really suggest you play this game please don't let the big name game reviews be the ones you go to for your game news. Trust yourself and trust your instincts I think you'll be pleasently surprised, I know I was

It feels a little blah as you first begin playing, but I promise you'll be hooked after the first memory remix. That is a very special thing.
The platforming is pretty basic and the fights are your standard button combo style, but they're solid and a few have given me a bit of trouble on normal difficulty (you can switch difficulty at any point in the game).
You'll remember this game a long time - it's special. I can't even describe the level of detail that is in Neo Paris. It's phenomenal.
There's nothing headline-worthy about the gameplay (basic but solid) but due to the story experience and sheer beauty, I have to highly recommend this game. It hits all the right buttons as a sci-fi futureland and has me very reluctant to put the controller down.
The game has great artistic atmosphere and gameplay. Great story too. Strong female lead that is still feminine.
I have not seen something quite this good using a female lead since the Tomb Raider franchise.
