By T. R. Gacobelli on April 25, 2008
Format: Hardcover
I have loved this book ever since I became a Beatles fan. It's the perfect book to buy if you are new to the lads or know them well. Michael was Paul's personal photographer throughout the early years. Inside this book you will find professional photos captioned with anecdotes of hilarious moments or things you may not know about the people pictured.

It begins with childhood photos that his father had taken Paul and Michael, then we slowly see Michael take hold of the camera and watch as Paul grows up as you progress through the book. This book isn't ALL about Paul, you'll find pictures of their mother and father, and tons of random shots of himself, Pete Best, George, John, Brian Epstein, Uncle Albert (remember the song?), Auntie Gin (song "Let'em In"), Jane Asher, The Goons, Elton John, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, and a few of and the earliest shots of Ringo before he trained his hair into a moptop. The best part about these photos is that he was there as the magic happened, for example a photo of Paul looking through a shop window at new italian-style boots that would soon become known as "beatle boots". George's first car (he was the first Beatle to get a car!) also gets a few photos, and also the proud moment of when he traded it in for a shiny new Jaguar. Michael was even invited backstage and to band parties, taking along his trusty camera to shoot some very in-the-moment photos. There are also photos of places like an overview of the city of Liverpool, the Pierhead, the Cavern Club, a Mersey riverboat, and overhead shot of their high school playground area. Michael was also an artist, he experimented with double exposures and silk-screening pictures, which shows up in this book as well. There are also pictures from the movie Help! that were deleted scenes from the film.

Anyway, there is too much to mention about this book. I really suggest you pick this up for yourself, a friend, or anyone who is a fan of old photographs or the Beatles.

yes, he, paul's brother, was there. at the very very beginning. he had "access". total. seriously, the photographs are stunning, they are very early, and this book is one of the few to have this many great pics of the very earliest beatles, in a very good quality ( i have the hardback).

of all beatle books, this is one of the very best. no poses, no fancy suits, just photos from paul mccartney's brother. i mean, i love it all, but these early pics are treasures. and they are printed very large, not little snap shots.

highly recommended.

What a fantastic book to own! Paul McCartney's father basically turned the family camera over to his son, Michael, when he was becoming a teen and developing a passion for photography. The story this book tells is amazing; It's of the McCartney family, the Beatles meeting each other, playing in Hamburg, the Cavern Club, and follows Paul and "the lads", as well as others they were around through until the mid-60's. Michael also became a "Pop Star" for awhile during this time with his group, Scaffold, but he has been known through the years for his photographic exhibits and commissions. If you have any interest in the Beatles, Paul, or the influences of so much of the music we have today, I think you'll find this book fascinating.

If you have ever visited Paul & Michael McCartney's teenage home is to walk away wanting to own copies of these priceless photographs of our heroes in their youth. The best photographic book on the early Beatles that I have ever seen.
