"IQ of 145 and Can't Remember?"
5 Stars
"IQ of 145 and Can't Remember?"
That was the headline hovering above a harsh professorial dude, staring at you with scorn in post-war print ads.Dr. Bruno Furst began his work in Germany but eventually scored big in America with his home study course.Sometimes in 10 volumes, sometimes in 12 volumes, always in slipcase, Furst adapted and "revised" his work over the years. He always offered a wide array of memory techniques and tricks (associating names with faces, number memorization, memory while playing cards, memory of visual images, remembering lists, remembering sports statistics, "Eyemindedness," "Earmindedness," etc.) peppered with vintage cartoons, photos, and commercial illustrations. All of his sets contained Examinations, Model Answers, and (apparently) the miniature paperback Number Dictionary.Clearly, a camp classic. Does it work? I have no idea.

I learned this as a child from my Father (a TV actor) and my uncle (a Navy pilot), both of whom needed strong and fast memory without writing stuff down for their livelihoods. This method made school trivial for me, and I could study up for exams in a fraction of the average time. I got maximum scores on all tests through GRE (except for the occasional question where I had not memorized the appropriate source material). I have taught it to many kids over the decades. The first ten can be taught in 15 minutes (within the attention span of almost any child). The first ten suffice to turn a child immediately from a bored, mediocre student into a super-student. The first 100 can be taught in 90 minutes, and that's really enough to improve your life dramatically. Really, for real. My Dad and uncle knew 1,000 and competed against each other for speed and accuracy. I know 128 because I memorized the ASCII table for password purposes. Disclaimer: I have no special memory talent, just a lifetime of training and practice with Furst's method.

Using money I had earned delivering papers, I bought the home study course when I was in high school. I devoured the material! Looking back, I realize it was one of the most educationally beneficial things I ever did. The methods I learned helped me through high school and college as well as in my career as a teacher. The methods for remembering that Furst teaches can take you far beyond his system. For example, the method of imagining something in an unusual or outrageous setting, visualizing it in motion, picturing it greatly enlarged, and giving it context are practical techniques that can be applied to remembering all sorts of things. All the books on memory development I've seen since I first studied this course seem to be based on Furst's methods. Before writing this review, I retrieved and browsed through my 58-year old set of lesson booklets. Perhaps the pages are yellowed and the illustrations look dated, but I believe the material is still clearly presented and entirely relevant.

My father recently passed away at age 96. He studied memory for many years, and even gave seminars on the subject... You Can Remember by Bruno Furst was his bible... he loved this course and would study it at least once a year... from tricks to the peg method, he amazed people with his ability to remember. I'll always remember dad, and as I was putting away his set of this work today came here to pass along his legacy...

I studied his course many years ago. It's definitely a wonderfully effective system, and the results are almost immediate. Spend just an hour or two studying the first parts of this course, and you will be able to remember a list of 100~200 random items within a matter of minutes.

But there is one catch: You have got to consistently / habitually apply everything in his course to your everyday life and work!!! Otherwise you'll soon forget the whole thing, as I did.
