This book really is on this occasion based very much around the characters seen by Gillian when she experienced flashbacks, and for the reader Galia, Mina and Strakye's characters within the story and the previous books become so much clearer, you are able to experience the trial, love and heart ach that these characters have experienced during their lives lost in histories past, but to Gillian and Shayne the effect on them has been very real, very much in the minute.
Also this book shines more light on the interaction that Gillian, Shayne and Mathias experienced in their past lives, this topic had been hinted at and both Gillian and Mathias had experienced an actual overlap of past lives into the present when they had been trapped underground, fighting for their lives as they desperately continued to aid Gillian on her quest to find the elusive Tenebris.
Shayne and Gillian continue to find out more about the cause and effect that brought about the fall of Tenebris and the Hollow City Coven and as always leaves unanswered questions and once again I am left counting the days to the release of the next book............................
Hazel Hunter's surpassed all her books so far with this one!
It is a rather dark erotic story that has some elements that might make one feel uncomfortable, but just briefly and only if you are unaware that these practices occurred as a regular part of life in ancient times. Skip over them if it bothers you. It will not drastically change the story.
It has all the elements of a Hollywood blockbuster like Antony and Cleopatra, Exodus, Spartacus, etc.
All the previous books show glimpses of the past that was Tenebris, but this time you get the full story.
It starts out with two young girls and a mysterious young man held as slaves on a ship headed to a life of slavery. Galia is a pretty young girl who befriends a smaller, weaker girl, Mina. They are almost attacked by one of the guards when the young man steps up and intervenes. He too is a slave, but does not act like one. Once off the ship the long trek through the desert begins. During this long forced march, they learn to lean on each other and encourage each other to survive. They cling to each other and fall in love.
Once in Tenebris Galia is forced by the Oracle to make a life or death choice. She can only choose one. The Goddess's Oracle is a bitter, mean-spirited woman, who is at the end of her reign, influenced by the Goddess. She begins to 'groom' Galia to be the next Oracle. The longer Galia is in the palace the more she feels the Goddess and her strength and thoughts invading her person.
Hollow City is an apt name, as the city is pristine white buildings and a fabulous palace, but rotten at its core. The edges are filled with the poor who barely subsist. Galia tries to send to help, but he Goddess destroys her efforts. The great evil is the Goddess.
Her will pervades the city and all its inhabitants except Galia, Mina, and Strayke. Their love for one another is pure and untouched by the evil that is the Goddess. At the end, Galia does become the next Oracle, but it brings with it destruction, pain, death and the anger and then laughter of the Goddess who sees her city, and the people who worshiped her, destroyed. The Goddess has plans....
As I said, it is a dark erotic love story, but so worth reading! And, the story has yet to reach its final chapters. I've already ordered the 6th book and will wait most impatiently for it's release. I will then, like others, start again with this fantastic epic adventure of love and loss with book 1, and hope the ending gives us a satisfactory conclusion. I wouldn't miss this next book, neither should you. Please read the story in order to gain a full appreciation of each character and their trials to find the lost city of Tenebris. Each piece fits into this ever winding, tightening tale!
Book gifted for an honest review and I honestly loved it.
