and I like the new Pole design better than the old one. The new saw kind of drags when you use it and
the old saw runs like a well oiled machine. Thank you
I would buy this product again.
I did have a problem out of the box, however. When tilted to the right, the saw started making a god-awful grinding sound (louder than the normal loud plastic gear sound). With the power off I could hear the motor armature sliding back and forth when the saw was tilted - there was much more end play than there should have been. As I looked closer through the vents I could see than the cooling fan was hitting the plastic end plate of the motor and cutting into it. I disassembled everything and found no shims or thrust washers to limit the end play on the fan end of the armature. A regular washer wouldn't work, and I had to machine a small brass bushing to fill the .060" gap between the fan blade and the bearings. If I had left it the way it was I suspect that the fan would have chewed a little more into the endplate and then stopped, but I would like to think that they simply left out a spacer and that they didn't design it this way.
On the plus side, in the process of disassembling it I got to see that they at least use roller bearings for the motor shaft and the chain sprocket, which surprised me a little. Anyway, I still think it's a good buy and I'll assume that my problem was an isolated incident. It was just easier for me to fix it than send it back.
UPDATE: This saw has proven to be extremely useful over the summer and has helped save me several times its original cost. One of the unanticipated benefits that I never really thought about was the ability to use it sideways to keep a safer distance from damaged trees where it is difficult to anticipate which way they are going to shift. It has a limited cut depth, but even so I was able to safely carve a nearly full-width wedge out of the base of a tall 24" windfall tree that even the pros were balking at (it was not bucket truck accessible, and I wouldn't want to be in a bucket near it). There is no doubt that it is a light duty unit and not built for heavy use, but it cuts remarkably well and I use it much more than expected.
My only complaint which cost one star is the box it was shipped in. When Fed-Ex delivered it only 2/3 of the box survived the trip held to the saw with a tremendous amount of packing tape. The Fed-Ex driver had to stand there like someone with an overfull bladder while I checked to see if all the parts were there. They were but if you sell this baby thru the mail a real box would be nice instead of a hardware store walk home with it container. Still an excellent tool!
