This is an engaging read that provides a thorough view of the cultural and artistic influence of Florence. I recommend this for anyone interested in the emergence of the renaissance, AND to anyone who is planning on traveling to Florence who has little or no foundation in the history of the city. It will enhance your visit to Florence!

Though I have always loved art, my knowledge about the Renaissance was minimal. This book gave me a really good grounding in order to read and study more. Gives a clear sense of the times and why Florence for the Renaissance. Great read.

I used this book as a tour guide on my trip in Italy and it was fantastic. I passed my art history class with flying colors.

Excellent: well written, scholarly, but not spoiled by academic points, and infused by a plainly genuine love & appreciation of the art & artists, that overcomes the lack of colour plates. NB The book also exists as part of the Everyman Art Library under the title 'Renaissance in Florence'

Very informative and fun to read

For once a book on art which also reveals some common sense on the part of the author: all monuments discussed are displayed on a map at the front which works miracles in terms of orientation and getting a feel for Florence. If you are planning to travel to Florence, you can just about use this small masterpiece as a kind of arts travel guide.
Content is comprehensive, presentation pleasant and eloquent. Type-faces and style are 1990s, of course - but that does not diminish its value.
Highly recommended.
