Product Description
Highly recommended by the Vintage company, Renaissance wax Polish will protect the surface of metals and wood from dust, fingerprints, liquids, and other environmental hazards. Renaissance wax Polish was originally formulated in the British museum research laboratories in the early 1950's, in response to a discussion amongst museum technicians at an international conference on fine-art conservation. When applied, it creates a micro-thin, lustrous layer that enhances shine while preventing damage. Renaissance wax Polish can also be used to remove old Polish build up.

In summary, I have tested this product on the following materials with outstanding results:
Finished and unfinished wood
Cast iron
Tool steel
Steel
Stainless steel
Chrome plating
Brass
Aluminum
Plastic
Rubber
Leather
Painted surfaces ( probably enamel )
I have found no issues with the product. Some complain about the scent, I found it to be much less invasive than paste wax, although I was in the garage with the doors open. It is true that you need to use the tiniest speck of wax you can get. I found that you wrap you application rag around your finger, and merely touch the surface of the wax, that's plenty. Two of those doses is enough to get complete coverage on a 2.75 inch by 12 inch plane base. The majority of time spent was cleaning the old wax/oil/grease from the tools. The time required for the application of wax and buff were insignificant overall. Other waxes "haze" but this one doesn't appear to work that way. It seems that you simply apply the wax, grab your buff rag and buff it. No waiting. To be honest, I was skeptical about the marketing hype, about how this product can be used on "everything" with no drawbacks. However, in practice, it appears to work exactly that way. I couldn't find anything that didn't benefit from a coat of Ren Wax.
With its high moisture resistance, it forms a barrier against the above mentioned threats while forming a durable, lustrous finish. It can be used on wood, metal, leather, stone, and many other finished surfaces. Renaissance Wax leaves no sticky surface and also doesn't take fingerprints as easily as many other waxes. I also love that it doesn't stain or discolor over time.
While I have used it on several of our more valuable antiques pieces, I primarily use it as a protective finish for metal work (both jewelry and other artistic works) as well as a wax coating for some oil paintings. NOTE: If you're using it as a final finish for oil paintings, the paint should have at least 6-9 months to dry (longer if thick impasto) and it should have a finished coat of varnish applied/cured prior to wax application.
On jewelry and other metalwork, it prevents tarnish and corrosion. On older pieces, it first cleans by lifting dirt and remnants of other waxes leaving the surface with a thin, hard protective film. It's wonderful on shiny metal finishes such as drawer pulls and helps them to maintain their shine and not oxidize. Conversely, on those metal pieces that have been oxidized with a beautiful patina (either naturally or artificially), this wax protects that appearance to prevent the look from altering.
Just so some of you don't get a big surprise when you order this and it arrives, that's not a typo on the product page...this Renaissance Wax comes in a tiny 2.25 oz. container. So, yes, it IS expensive...but I feel that it's worth paying the extra for something that works so well and is used by museums around the world. The only downside is the smell, but that gradually begins to disappear about 24 hours after application.
I use this polish on my polymer clay projects personally. There are so many different techniques to sanding and buffing your pieces. I use a Dremel along with this wax polish and felt tips. It doesn't have any sort of shiny finish which is great when I want to keep projects more matte. I would consider it necessary when finishing my pieces as the difference in quality is significant. It really elevates the final look. I've had my container for a year now and I've barely made a dent in it, even though I use it on a regular basis.
