Know Your Books
There's a lot to Juggle if you want to become Grand Librarian. There are 510 unique books in the gamespread across 152 cards and divided into 6 categories.
Gather Your Assistants and Start Shelving
Over a series of rounds Librarians will send out their assistants to gather books for their bookshelves. They will use action spaces to do this in hopes of acquiring the most prominent books with a large variety of subjects.
Be Ready for the Mayor’s Official Inspector to Judge Your Library
She will use her Official Inspection Form to grade your library on several criteria including alphabetical order, shelf stability, prominent works, and variety. And don’t think she’ll turn a blind eye to books the Council has banned.
How to Play
The Preperation Phase
Beginning each round, the 1st player will reveal one location tile per player to form the board. Then deal cards to the tiles that require them.
The Placement Phase
Sending as assistant to a location tile with an empty space, or on your personal library tile which is always available. The location tiles willeither have an immediate effect, or a delayed effect for when the round is over.
The Resolution Phase
Once players have no more assistants to place, the locations get resolved in numerical order, if they have a delayed effect. Then all leftover cards are discarded from any location.
The Clean Up Phase
After all locations have been resolved, remove all but the lowest numerical board from play and move that lowest value to the town board. This tile is now available for each subsequent round. Check to see if any player triggers the final round.

You’ll be reciting your ABC’s quite a lot and asking yourself questions about what goes where, and all the while wondering if you can possibly squeeze a few more letter “M” shelves into your crooked wreck of a library. Ex Libris a fun light-weight fantasy game where you seek out fantastic tomes and try to outdo your opponents. Everyone gets to play a different fantasy faction with a unique power in an effort to not only make the biggest and baddest library in town, but all to outscore everyone else.
There are 6 types of tomes in Ex Libris and every game 1 type of tome will be a “banned book” one will be heavily favored (and score extra), and each player will have 1 of the remaining types as their own special focus. You also have to worry about building the actual shelves (represented by a selection of cards with random “books” in a certain letter of the alphabet; you can only build shelves up to 3 high, but as wide as you like, bearing in mind you miss out on points at the end if your shelves aren’t stable (missing spaces, or floating shelves).
It’s a great game for literate people and could be REALLY great for kids as an educational tool. It’s not my usual flavor, I picked it up for my wife as a Christmas gift and she really loves it – it’s won me over too.
