- "S.R. Staley's contemporarymiddle-grade novel, 'Renegade,' jumps right into the brutal world of girl gangs"and "weaves a tale of middle-school mayhem, emotional insecurity, physicalbrutality, and complicated relationships." Tallahassee Democrat (August 4, 2013)
From the Author
"Renegade" explores the brutal reality of girl bullying and gangs, but shows girls (and boys) how to transcend this violence through leadership, courage, and self-confidence. "Renegade" is not a chronological sequence to "A Warrior's Soul," although these books are in the same series. They are on parallel story lines. So, with a "A Warrior's Soul," I focused on boy bullying and gangs in a wealthier suburban middle school, "Renegade" focuses on the gritty realities of an inner city middle school. Nevertheless, "Renegade" remains true to the main themes I strive for as an author: We can all become leaders if we have the emotional and practical tools. Maria is her own girl, and it's only through her own willingness to acknowledge her own personal strength that she can overcome the ruthless realities of her life at school. She becomes an everyday super hero!
