Since most everyone died during the wars, there are few humans and fewer Gen Ens to continue on. However not only did some of the Gen Ens (Enhanced humans) survive, but some normal humans survived as well and they are slowly creating haven and sanctuaries along newly established trade routes.
Sadly, many of the men who control these havens fear the Gen Ens. Not entirely without reason. Some of the enhanced humans are evil and one is demented.
But when good Gen Ens help save common people and their kids, it creates appreciation and trust. And had the Gen En soldiers been allowed to remain roaming about, they might have broken down the fear of Gen Ens. Unfortunately, one of their own, is actually a Russian spy, sabotaging their attempts to bond with the humans. All they know it that someone is trying to kill and discredit them.
This is a very complex, large cast, high drama. Life and death situations occur in rapid succession. The story hops between the various units, all dealing with different problems. Betrayals abound when they are called back to Vista.
When they return to Vista, many lose their rank and their standing is now tarnished, and their leader is asked to leave. Still, they agree on one thing: They are still a unit and they will still come to each other’s aid. That declaration saved the book from having a very sad ending. It gives me hope for book 3.
I liked the different interactions Shan, Mac, and Wade had with other characters. Friends and fellow Vistans, potential allies, as well as possible enemies. How they are each trying to form new alliances and trying to determine who they can and can't trust. All for the safety of The Vista and its people. They are also trying to learn more about themselves as Altereds/Gen Ens.
I thought Renegades was just as exciting as The Vista and Backlash. Solid continuation! A book doesn't need to be non-stop action, full of explosions all the way through, to be a great and exciting read. I love a good story with an interesting plot that sucks you in. And most importantly, characters you feel invested in and care about. That's what I really love about this series. I can't wait to find out what happens to the characters, and what new twists and turns are in store for them. I especially loved the ending. Very good twist there! And it definitely sets up the next book! I'm really looking forward to book 3 and what happens next! I can't wait!
