As the new “kid” on the job Patrick has some very big shoes to fill and finds himself clashing with his predecessor, Detective Hawkins. Hawkins who is the department’s “Ace” knows how to push Patrick’s buttons and we find Patrick being torn between following his gut, his emotion or go with the flow of his new job as he settles in to his new role and the intense journey to bring the elusive “Surgeon” to justice.
Overall I was very impressed with the story line, definitely kept me captivated and the author does a real good job of getting the reader inside the main character’s head and articulating who he is and how he got there. Definitely looking forward to reading Jason Pellegrini’s new book, his debut novel was great so I have high expectations for the next one!
I do think it was a bit lengthy. I think it could be edited down and made even better, but some people love hyper-detailed writing, so that's just my opinion. I also have to admit I saw the big revelation coming, although the novel isn't what I'd call predictable. I also thought the ending was a bit dismaying, but understandable and sadly realistic.
Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who likes crime dramas or suspense novels. Fans of Thomas Harris and the Hannibal novels would probably especially enjoy this one. Even though it was a bit lengthy, it reads pretty quickly, so it doesn't drag much. I'm interested to see what Jason Pellegrini writes next!

This is an intense serial killer story which will keep you chained to the book all the time!!
One thing that still puzzles me is where did the pancuronium bromide come from.
But while Patrick & Hawkins hunt "the Surgeon" & the body count keeps growing, Patrick himself is being hunted. He's hunted by the demons from his past mistakes who haunt him in his sleep, by a growing & lethal rage that threatens to destroy the two most important people in his life & a crippling suspicion of his "new" partner which only feeds his rage.
I could not put this book down. Pellegrini wove four stories seamlessly into one breathtaking story w/ no loose ends & I can't wait to see what he writes next!
