About the Author
James Han Mattson is the acclaimed author of The Lost Prayers of Ricky Graves. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, he is the recipient of awards from the Copernicus Society of America and Human-ities North Dakota. He was a featured storyteller on The Moth and has taught writing at the University of Iowa, the University of Cape Town, the George Washington University, the University of Maryland, Murray State University, and the University of California–Berkeley. He is currently the fiction editor of Hyphen magazine. He was born in Seoul, Korea, and raised in North Dakota.

About the author

James Han Mattson was born in Seoul, Korea and raised in North Dakota. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, he has received grants from the Michener-Copernicus Society of America and Humanities North Dakota. He has been a featured storyteller on The Moth, and has taught at the University of Iowa, the University of Cape Town, the University of Maryland, the George Washington University, Murray State University, and the University of California – Berkeley. In 2009, he moved to Korea and reunited with his birth family after 30 years of separation.
He is the author of two novels: The Lost Prayers of Ricky Graves (Little A: 2017) and Reprieve (William Morrow/HarperCollins: 2021). He is currently the fiction editor of Hyphen Magazine.

I wouldn't call this book a "horror" necessarily, and so I can understand why some people might not like it. Perhaps they went in expecting a fast pace thriller horror book. This book is slow and thoughtful, a tense psychological character study. Yes, there are some horror-filled scenes in the haunted house, but the majority of the book is detailing each character's life leading up to the event and showing how they all intertwined.
There are multiple timelines - before Quigley house, the court case after Quigley house, and the present day. There are also multiple POVs. That being the case, there are a lot of moving parts. You'll have to pay attention, at least I did! I usually don't like multiple timelines and POVs, but Mattson did an amazing job with it, I was hooked on each part of the story, and each character felt fully realized and developed, even the most heinous ones.
The reason I am rating 4 instead of 5 is that the more I think of it, the more I wish I got a bit more from the ending of the story. There are a lot of things I wished we were able to see that we never got to. Also, although I loved the social commentary aspects of the story, there were some scenes where it felt like it was a bit hand fisted, which made the dialogue feel forced and fake.
I'm a fan of Mattson, really looking forward to seeing what he publishes next.
I did enjoy the author's writing style and loved some of the descriptions, especially of Thailand.
Would be willing to give the author a second chance with his next book.
-Come for the horror and you’ll find the pacing too slow. Is this horrific and thrilling? Yes! But it’s also taking you on a journey. It takes time.
-None of the characters are explored in depth. That is to say you aren’t in anyone’s head and you don’t know anything for certain. That forces the story to maintain a level of mystery and uncertainty some readers might not like.
-The level of gore is medium, I’d say. If you like heavy gore in horror you’ll say it’s not enough. If you don’t like gore the Cells will be too much.
What I Did Like:
-I always enjoy dual timelines, specifically in horror. It’s fascinating to read about seemingly normal people and normal timelines and know something will happen to bring them to this other timeline where something awful happened.
-“…life is the real horror, isn’t it?” That quote from this book totally sums up this message. I agree. Real people are the worst horrors. The things we do to each other are terrifying. This book focuses on that.
-Clashing genres. Contemporary could-be-happening-anywhere story slams into horror in the best way. The lessons are contemporary and real. The terror is real. It’s well done and it will stick in your brain a long time.
-The court transcripts are a good addition. They add to the sense of urgency and drama.
Flawed characters. They’re all battling something, they’re all so terribly realistic and flawed. Some confront it, some get called out for it, some don’t ever realize it. But they’re all so flawed. It’s incredibly realistic.
Who Should Read This One:
If you think real horror is what we do to each other, this is your kind of book. Packed with social commentary and yet terrifying, this one will please readers who like multilayered stories.

I can’t ignore how much my brain will return to thinking about this book and these characters.
The biggest problem is the lack of context (spoiler alert) provided to make race such a significant factor in the ending. Other than the lack of racial diversity how did Nebraska become 1950s Mississippi? Where was the triggering event? Why did we need someone from Thailand to point out American racism? I was disappointed at what I felt to be a switch in focus.

In six terrifying challenges teams of four contestants each have to collect a set number of red envelopes to win a huge cash prize. That is if they make it to the sixth cell, most call out the safe word - reprieve - after the first cell.
The team whose experience is at the centre of the plot is composed of Bryan, Jaidee, Victor and Jane. By the end of the night, one of them will be dead.
I admit that escape rooms in general give me the wiggins, so I approached this novel featuring an intense escape room with some trepidation. However, while some chapters take place in the various cells, most of the narrative explores the events leading up to that fatal night, character development, and transcripts from the subsequent court case.
‘Reprieve’ has three point of view characters. Team member Jaidee, a student from Thailand in his freshman year at the University of Nebraska and Bryan’s roommate; then there is Leonard, a local hotel manager with a connection to the owner of Quigley House; and finally Kendra, Bryan’s fifteen-year-old cousin recently moved with her mother from Washington D.C. to Nebraska following her father’s sudden death.
Kendra was by far my favourite character: a goth girl wise beyond her years and deeply into all things horror. Aside from being an outsider by temperament, she is also a black girl in a predominantly white community. Due to her interests she gets a part time job at Quigley House.
‘Reprieve’ is a structurally complex novel in terms of movement through time and shifting perspectives. While not supernatural horror, ‘Reprieve’ combines aspects of various genres including literary horror, mystery, thriller and suspense along with social commentary on culture, privilege, otherness, identity, and racism. So, it has weight as well as jump scares.
Despite its strong gore and my aversion to escape rooms, ‘Reprieve’ proved a big hit with me as I am all for literary horror and genre-spanning novels. I found it intelligent and thought-provoking with well developed characters both main and supporting. I especially appreciated its Part V, set in 2019, as it brought a sense of closure.
Highly recommended.
