The Characters: The book is told from Thea's perspective. Yes, she's a college basketball player, but don't worry. Even if you couldn't give a rat's ass about basketball, you can still love this book. It's an important piece of who she is and how she approaches decisions, but knowledge of the game isn't required. I loved Thea's character. She's smart, witty, conflicted, and coming into her own just like many women her age.
When I found out Keaton Lowe, the rock star in HOW TO REPRIMAND YOUR ROCK STAR, was inspired by Loki I just knew this was going to be good. Keaton is a well-written and lively character without that piece of information, but with that little tidbit of information he jumped right out of the pages of the book and strutted his way right into my imagination. Seriously, she references "that rascal grin" and I melt.
Really though, Loki references aside, Keaton is enough to make a girl swoon, or seriously consider taking up life as a domme. He's got that bad boy edge, but he's constantly surprising you.
Outside of the two of them, Mina brought in some fun secondary characters. Thea's teammates, including her roommate Cassie, and coach help keep the story grounded in the college setting where she lives. The members of her family lend additional dimension to her character, and the relationship (more later). Then there's Scarlett. I won't give away anything more on here, but DAMN!Read more ›
With the help of the House Mother for the team, she learns that she is a Domme and Keaton wants to submit to her. Scarlett, the house mother, will train her as a Domme and Thea will love every minute of it. And she is always thinking of ways to dominate Keaton. When he tells her he wants more with her, can she believe him and not the rumors? Can she use her skills as a Domme to help with her basketball? Can the team make it to the finals with Thea’s help? This is a first for me by Mina Vaughn and I loved it. What’s not to love, a sexy rock god, college basketball and maybe true love will win in the end.

Thea “Pops” Papastathopoulos is the up and coming Rookie of the Year at UConn. Balancing her GPA and staying on the starting lineup is a full time job, especially if she wants to maintain her scholarship. A chance encounter with Keaton Lowe throws her from the rule abiding path she has always taken. His expecting eyes and behavior surface a new part to Thea that she didn’t even know existed. This extremely popular musician is taken back by Thea. He loves the fact that she has absolutely no idea who he is or what he does. So when he strategically implements himself in her life are they going to be bound for disaster or pleasure?
This is the 2nd Mina Vaughn book I have read and they NEVER disappoint. I will freely admit I love a good D/s book. The difference with Mina’s books is the woman is the Top/ Domme/Mistress….Whatever you want to call it and these girls know how to gain submission. There is no smut here; just a girl with a taste for more than vanilla sex. At least she thinks that I mean she is a virgin so I think sex in general is going to be exploratory as well it should be. So you have the freshman rookie doing her college thing then she gets caught up in the too-tight-leather-pants-rocker who only wants to submit to her. But the beauty in the book is Thea grasping what she wants in life. Knowing what she wants and taking it.Read more ›
Keaton: the unabashed rock god with punk-ish sex appeal and a silver tongue.
When a chance--if chance it is, indeed--encounter brings them into each others' lives, the reaction is instantanious and electrifying. Instinctively, he can sense the need for command in her life--the very thing he craves over himself. They even each other out, helping the other to grow, with him helping her take control, her exerting a force greater than his rocker, "world is his oyster" life provided. For as intoxicating as their relationship grows, however, that doesn't make it effortless. Something about college life and basketball obligations doesn't mix too well with spotlights and world tours. Even so, they're determined to make it work--and what the goddess wills, the goddess gets!
HTRYRO was a fun, frisky novel with a solid, fast-pace that will get readers sprinting along like laps on the basketball court. Like in HOW TO DISCIPLINE YOUR VAMPIRE, the writing was witty and the humor was spot-on. The characters were enjoyable, from main characters like the blossoming Thea and roguish Keaton to lovable friends like the fiery Scarlet and the true blue Callie. As the story progressed it was nice getting to see the heroine come into her own.
Unlike in VAMPIRE, where there were obvious paranormal aspects at play, readers can leave this book with a lingering query in mind: was everything coincidence, down to Keaton's uncanny foresight and knack for slight of hand, or was there something positively mythological at play?
All around, a fun read, and a definite recommendation for anyone looking for a clever writing and a rocking story.
(Also, there was a fantastic joke subtly nodding at vampires into BDSM--a lovely little meta joke between the author and readers of her prior novel.)
