Cons: It is dusty, a dust mask might be needed when breaking this up and you might want to do it outside. No better than other coconut based products.
This is my second purchase, however, for whatever reason Amazon sent me the a different brand the first time around. It was pretty much the same stuff so I didn't press the issue but Amazon did reject my review for it. Reptichip is a bit hyped up, I think, by others but I found it no different than that other brand I used this last time. Quality was the same. That's not to say I don't like it, I am giving it 4 stars. I'm leaving off a star because it's advertised as not being dusty but that just isn't true. Also, I'm not sure how long coconut is suppose to retain humidity, but my experience has shown me that I still have to mist my enclosures frequently. Advertising this as so great for retaining humidity is going to depend on your location/climate. It is better than aspen. Overall, recommended.
It was easy to work with; I just sprayed it with a hose and waited for a while, gradually chipping pieces off with a shovel. It did take longer than 15 minutes to rehydrate; it was closer to 45 mins, but still not a ton of effort. It filled up about half of a large plastic container once it was fully expanded.
I try to keep substrate for my skink's enclosure at about 2-3" depth in a 4ft x 2ft enclosure. I think I will easily get about 2.5 fills out of this block of coconut chips, which is a pretty great deal. I just stored the excess in a plastic bin.
It doesn't seem to be very dusty, and absorbed water effectively without actually getting wet. It smells very nice; not "earthy" at all. The pieces don't have any sharp edges, and look large enough to keep most any animals from eating them.
I think it's a great choice so far!
Will definitely always use from now in for inside and out enclosure.
