The greatness of Plato, and how this book, more than 2000 year later, perfectly fits the current global political situation are not part of my rating. This review is for the kindle version, and the work of the translator Mr. Jowett. It was my first time reading it in English, and it was as inspiring as the first time i read it. Kudos. As per those looking for a kindle version with annotations, footnotes, because my teacher told me "i have to read it"....if you cannot understand the message beyond Plato words from the simple way it was presented in this version, there is no mountain of footnotes that can help you.

Good, but requires investment

Right up front, I haven't finished the book yet. The wording is antiquated (or "classical," if you prefer), and it takes some determination to get the most out of it. But this is considered a great work of Western civilization, so I consider it worth the effort. It starts with a "Forward" or "Analysis" that runs to over 40% of the book (Kindle edition)!!! I ended up skipping it, but I believe I will read it after I finish reading Plato's words. Some guidance (if not assistance) would be welcome. There is a lot to digest here, and it is not for the casual reader. Frankly, it feels like I'm studying for college again! But nothing worthwhile is easy, and I expected this to be both worthwhile and difficult. I think I was right.

This is a book about Plato recording a conversation between Socrates and his peers over the concept of "justice" and "the State." About 99% of the book is written in dialogue, and it is mostly about the philosophers going back and forth, asking questions about the concept of justice while the other confirms or disagree. If you like to read mindless monologue while waiting for something, Plato's "Republic" is one option.

This book is a poorly published example of The Republic. There are no chapter or section markers and there is no attribution to the translator. Upon receiving this book (and being severely dissatisfied), I promptly ordered The Republic of Plato: Second Edition by Allan Bloom and have been very happy. Being that this book and another share the same ratings (including the same comments), I count this as false advertising.

The Republic is part of the foundation of Western thought. I don't know anyone wh can call himself or herself truly educated who has not read it somewhere in the formation of his/her mind. It is also eminently readable.

Lots of big ideas and arguments that seem ultimately self-serving. The Cave is here, as well as a tasty and perceptive bit about tyranny. But the words he placed in the mouth of Socrates don’t seem to synch that well with what we know about the teacher himself. This Republic would be a soulless nightmare, unfortunately. However, many of the arguments for hierarchy and monotheism make early appearances here.
