About the Author

David Cole was born and raised in Los Angeles. His father, the doctor accused of killing Elvis Presley, delivered David in the building that is now the Church of Scientology headquarters. Things started out weird. And they'd get worse.

Described in the L.A. Times as a “meta-ideologue” (“an existentialist on a quest to understand how ideologues invent their realities”), Cole soon became involved in the controversy that exploded in the early ‘90s regarding the role and function of the Auschwitz concentration camp during the Holocaust, and the extent to which it was used for mass killings. Barely old enough to legally drink, Cole, who is Jewish, found himself appearing as an expert on the camp on such top-rated shows as 60 Minutes, Phil Donahue, Montel Williams, and 48 Hours. He was also interviewed in publications including The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and The Jerusalem Report.

In 1997, a $25,000 bounty was put on Cole’s head by the violent extremist group, Jewish Defense League. He changed his name and faked his death, emerging years later as filmmaker and respected conservative activist and author David Stein. As Stein, his work was carried by every major conservative organ in the U.S., including Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Fox News, Commentary, The Weekly Standard, the Breitbart sites, The Daily Caller, The Blaze, and The Washington Times.

Stein also ran one of the largest GOP party organizing operations on the West Coast, mixing congressmen, military leaders, and administration officials with rock and roll, pole dancers, and lots of liquor.

In 2013, Stein’s past as Cole caught up with him, when he was publicly “outed” by his ex-girlfriend. The story of his outing made headlines on The Huffington Post, Yahoo News, AOL News, The Guardian, Gawker, MSN, The Washington Times, and American Spectator, among many other sites and newspapers.

Unexpectedly Great Read!

Before I bought this book I had only heard of David Cole from his days when he was questioning some aspects of the Holocaust. First of all, David Cole is not a Holocaust Denier. He does not support Nazism and he agrees that the Nazis murdered millions of Jews as well as millions of other people. His arguments have to do with challenging where and when genocide of the Jews were actually carried out.
Now that I have pointed that out, Republican Party Animal has virtually nothing to do with his arguments concerning the Holocaust. It is his extraordinary story about how he faked his own death, changed his name, and disappeared from public view after the JDL put a $25,000 dollar bounty on his head. He then describes the fascinating years from that point on until an angry bunny boiling model ex-girlfriend brutally "outed" him, essentially ruining everything he had built for himself up until that point. By turns hilariously funny, scathing towards his enemies, self-deprecating, and acerbic, this was one heck of a read that I would recommend to anyone.

I'd seen Cole's documentary videos several years ago when I was reviewing the information presented on the Holocaust as we know it. His work stands head and shoulders above any of his peers. Through the power of the internet, several years after he'd faked his death, he was still making an impact. Fast forward a few years and I bumped into this book. Cole writes in a style that reminds me of James Elroy. Edgy and to the point. Why beat around the bush? He has an interesting story to tell.

If you're looking to unlock certain pieces of a larger puzzle this book should be on your list.

Outstanding! A fun and informative read

I wasn't sure if I would like this book, since I'm no "party animal." After the first few pages I knew I would finish the book and enjoy the ride, and I was right on both accounts.

First, let me say that the author has been slandered by some critics as a Holocaust "denier" but he is nothing of the kind. Along those lines, much of the book is a tour de force on how our fellow human creatures can be unjust and irrational and behave in all sorts of vindictive ways. At the same time, the author never lets his own level of self-awareness slip, so we're informed of his own mistakes and disasters as he follows his tortured path through the media circuit.

If you're focused on Holocaust history, you'll find interesting references here but that's not what the book is really about. The true value comes from watching the mahinations people create when faced with a perspective that contradicts their own cherished assumptions - even when those contradictions do not have much effect on what we know about history, such as the fact (which the author never contradicts and repeatedly reaffirms) that the Nazis were murderous and genocidal and executed millions of innocent men, woman and children.

I'd recommend this book to anyone remotely curious about the inner workings of Hollywood conservative groups and their diverse memberships.

David Cole makes no effort to attract sympathy for his person, as he writes about the time of his documentary on Auschwitz. His motivation in making 'Cole in Auschwitz' was exposing the truth and that awarded him a place on a death list. He doesn't delve deeply into the revisionism and his opinions are found in the back of the book. Interestingly, Cole still believes in extermination camps. You have to wonder if threats on your life shapes a person's opinions on such issues. Slipping into anonymity with his new name, Cole still made money with his extensive knowledge on the Holocaust. He sold copies of an execution with poison gas that he did not believe was Russian. At least you know it exists.
Emphasis was spent on the unknown world of the conservative community of California, Friends of Abe. With his new name and unknown background he managed to build himself a name as someone who can bring people together for a good party. In the left-wing snake pit that the West-Coast is, a conservative needs to tread carefully. The democrat world of Hollywood does not tolerate non-conformism, let alone GOP members. So they remained anonymous, until now. Cole names them one by one. There was very little he could do after they all turned their back on him with a total lack of style. There is very little tolerance for anyone who's branded a 'Holocaust denier' (which he isn't). So Cole wrote this book. It is well-written and easy to read.

First of all, it is not a book on Holocaust denial, but given his history, David Cole has fully explained where he stands on the issue in the Appendix. It is at its core the story of how willing people are to fool themselves when they are emotionally invested in their pet beliefs. But it is more than that. It also reveals the deceptions and manipulations that consequently results. At its simplest it could be a story about Hollywood politics, but I see that as just a medium through which our beloved author is revealing to us the great secrets about human nature. You will come out smarter once you finish reading this book.

This book was a real page-turner! I literally could not put it down! David Cole has led an extraordinary life with twists and turns galore and he wrote about it with such candor, intelligence and humor. I found myself laughing out loud many times while reading this book. His life would make a great movie! I hope someone steps up to the plate and does his story justice, as entertaining and illuminatingly informative as it is. I have seen his revisionist documentary and I was impressed with his investigative skills. His life story shows how complicated life can be, and it's not always black and white--- there are lots of gray areas. David Cole has explored topics that many would never dare to do, and is truly a unique individual, who must be celebrated. He is a courageous and genuine human being. Bravo!
