Instead, imagine some academic writing a well-researched and footnoted work intended for popular audiences about a war a few decades in the past. Yep, you got it. Footnotes, quotations from other scholarly works, quotations from people's journals and diaries, etc. If you're used to reading that sort of nonfiction about WW2 or the Civil War, then you have a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about. Assuming you like that kind of scholarly writing directed towards a popular audience (and I really do), then I think you would enjoy this book even though it is fiction.
As other commentators have noted, some of the technology was a bit far out there. Other technology seemed right around the corner. I'm not going to criticize. It's difficult to figure out what technology is going to emerge in just a few decades.
