I won this book in a contest from the author. This is my honest opinion and fair review.
Anytime a book entertains and educates you’ve just read a winner.
Professional musician Cressa Carrway makes her second appearance in this cozy mystery set in the frozen suburbs of Minneapolis where she takes a job as the novice conductor of a community chamber music ensemble. To supplement her income, she moonlights as the organist in two churches sitting across the road from each other.
What could go wrong in this seemingly ideal rural setting with friendly people, All-American families, tree lined streets and the comfort of all those churches? Taking a quote from Ms. George, here’s a start: “Whenever you have people, you have conflict. Just because it’s a church doesn’t mean it’s all sweetness and light.” Later one of the ministers goes on say: “…[The] parishioners were usually law-abiding people. Of course, there was the occasional shoplifter, quite a few adulterers, and some who treated their wives and children badly. A percentage of the teenagers in any given year had brushes with the law: drugs, traffic violations, generally keeping bad company.”
This only cracks the surface. Begin with a burglar and heroin addict constantly breaking into the churches. Toss in several duplicitous adults, church committee members who think their volunteer positions are on a par with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a manic-depressive who doesn’t always stay on his meds and a sneaky killer—or two.
Hopkins, Minnesota certainly isn’t all “sweetness and light.” And Cressa has stepped into the middle of all this subliminal tension and conflict and crime.
Watch her uncover the clues to learn who killed the choir director, help restore the community to relative tranquility (until the springtime, perhaps) and teach all of us a little more about serious music than we knew before we began reading.
