Mercedes aka Macie has suffered from chronic anxiety for years which makes her life hell at times. Experiencing new things, being around new people or even just going out in public can trigger overwhelming thoughts and fears, so she tends to keep to herself. Making friends has not been easy, and after being estranged from her brother for years, she is slowly starting to rebuild a relationship with him. Ford (call sign Truck) comes with a whole new family of Delta Force brothers and their significant others, and she is constantly terrified of doing or saying something that will push him away again. But when she finds herself in danger, Truck is the first person she calls.
Colt is Truck's commanding officer, and he thought he and Macie made a connection when he helped her through a panic attack at her brother's wedding. When she left in the middle of the night without so much as a note, he decided he must have been wrong and didn't pursue her to avoid stressing her out if she truly wasn't interested in him. Now, with her life on the line as she flees her apartment in the middle of the night barefoot and in pajamas, his sole focus is getting her through the situation. His voice calms her and is her lifeline through the experience, and he resolves to keep her safe no matter what her brother may think of that.
Macie and Colt complement each other in every way, and his men and their wives are stunned at the different in him when he interacts with Macie. They clearly have chemistry but this is a slow burn kind of romance. He has an uncanny ability to read her moods and he proceeds with caution in understanding of her daily struggle until she finally can't take it anymore and makes her interest clear.
Macie may suffer from a disease, but I love that her strength was showcased in her interactions with the wives club and with Colt. He is undoubtedly a protector and an alpha, but his softer side for her was just right as well. All in all, this was a wonderful and quick read which reminded me why I need to crack open those other books in the series that are sitting on my Kindle waiting for me!
Macie has a lot of anxiety and she isn't sure about a lot of things but she is sure that she feels safe with Colt, he grounds her a way no one else ever has. He doesn't mind her flaws and he wants her. He wants is all with her if only she can see that and not let her anxiety over take her.
Macie is a strong character even thought the anxiety can be too much for her. She can't turn her thoughts off and she worries about a lot of stuff most people don't. She has suffered a lot in her teenaged years and her parents are horrible people. She became a wonderful woman despite her parents. Colt is your typical alpha male hero. There are stories about him that might make some women run or complain. He has his reasons and he is a sexy, loyal, caring man who is always there for his teams and instills loyalty in them as well.
This was a fun, fast, sexy story. I was sad when it ended only because I wanted more. But then I was want more when I finish a novel by Ms. Stroker. I can't wait to meet the new team and see what kind of women they fall for and will Macie be the one to steer them in the right direction?
Mercedes Laughlin had a very hard childhood which left her with a great deal of anxiety. She worried all the time about things that most people would never worry about. She had chosen her apartment with care and made sure that there were at least two other means of escape in addition to the front door. She had a carpenter come in and make a false wall in the back of her walk-in closet where she could go and hide if necessary or when she had severe migraines and needed a totally dark place to be. She was working very hard to not totally depend on medication, especially the one that put her completely out. She worked creating websites for people from her home so didn’t have to face large groupings of people on a regular basis. She had just recently been reunited with her brother Ford (also known as Truck) and was very careful not to upset him in any way because he might disappear on her again. She blamed herself for his going in to the Army at a young age and being gone from her life. Her parents also told her that he had gone because she was bad and he was mad at her. They were definitely mental abusive to her. Truck had recently gotten married and at his wedding, she had an episode; but Truck’s commanding officer, Colton Robinson, had seen it and had escorted her out before she made a scene. He had stayed with her that night to calm her down. Although he was attracted to her, she had left the next morning and he had no way of getting hold of her without asking Truck.
Macie was unable to sleep and so heard two men outside her apartment talking about breaking in and getting something as well as abusing her and hurting her. She was able to climb out a window and go down a nearby tree. She had taken her phone and called Truck for help. He was in a debriefing with Colton and when he walked out of the room, Colton followed him. Together, they left immediately to help Macie. Truck drove while Colton talked to Macie and calmed her down and talked her into saving herself. Truck called the police in her town and sent them on their way as well.
Who were the two men, what did they want, and who did they work for? Truck, Colton and the rest of the team have to figure out the answers before Macie is hurt again. Can they keep her safe long enough to thwart whomever is after her?

Having read Truck's book - we all know what a difficult childhood he and Macie had but to hear this from Macie's point of view adds to the previous book and story. We know just how good Colonel Robinson is and how well he looks after the men under his command - but to be able to get to know him as Colt too is the perfect finish to what has been an amazing series!
Another beautifully written instalment from the amazing Susan Stoker - is this the final instalment or will Ms Stoker gift us with more?
The minute we meet Macie, it was action packed... Colt was as over the top alpha male as one would expect, and Trucks boss..
Loved the other characters appearing and seeing how they are doing...
Macie's previous love interest (if you could even call him that) had the negative impact on the love story.. it wasn't a greatly thought out part of the storyline but I am here for the romance :-) and friendships that Susan grows so beautifully....
