Resident Evil 6 - The Most Ambitious, Immersive Resident Evil To-date

Blending action and survival horror, Resident Evil 6 promises to be the dramatic horror experience of 2012. Resident Evil favorites Leon S. Kennedy and Chris Redfield are joined by new characters, including Jake Muller, to face a new horror, the highly virulent C-virus, as the narrative moves between North America, the war-torn Eastern European state of Edonia and the Chinese city of Lanshiang. Joining this cast will be presidential aide Derek Simmons, who vows to track down Leon for his involvement in the President's death, and femme fatale Ada Wong. But what part will Ada play as the story unravels and does she have ties to the mysterious Neo-Umbrella?

With three distinct, yet interwoven story threads, each with their own pair of protagonists for either solo or co-op play, both offline and online, not only will Resident Evil 6 deliver both different perspectives and gameplay styles but, with the introduction of the innovative Crossover gameplay mechanic players will be able to team up and share the horror. At key moments during the game, up to four players can join together online to tackle a specific situation, with some stages seeing the usual partnerships swapped to further increase the depth of gameplay.

The anthology includes Resident Evil 1-5 via code that can be redeemed on the Playstation Store; which is about the only negative thing that can be said about this product.

The game itself trounces Resident Evil 5 in just about every possible way. Though I think 5 had slightly better graphics, 6 had a much better atmosphere and plays better with its improved controls. You can now move while aiming--an extremely belated and necessary feature that unfortunately still does not pull off as good as its other action-horror contemporary Dead Space. The game also removes the tank-like controls from all previous installments with a more proverbial 3d movement. Though the game has improved controls, they do have a bit of a learning curve with its wonky cover system and its slide/dive mechanic. It's strange and weird, but very rewarding once you get better at it.

In terms of its story, there's not much to write home about. It's Resident Evil. Any fan of the series knows that it's never excelled in the storytelling department and this one is no exception. Some of the dialogue is extremely cheesy and the whole 3 campaign story doesn't reveal much at all--until you play the 4th 'secret' campaign, which clears up a few loose ends but overall doesn't do much. In the end I still found the story to be much more satisfying than Resident Evil 5's awful story. The old and new characters are great too, and some of the development and relationships between some of them are done well, particularly the partnership between the old character Chris and newcomer Piers.

The game itself is a hell of a lot of fun to play. It still features the same behind the character 3rd person scheme that Resident Evil 4 made so popular and the many subsequent games that emulated it. It now has a fully 3d rotating camera which is great too. The game is split into 4 campaigns, each with differing slightly in style. Leon's campaign is much more dark, slow paced; Chris' is all out-action; Jake's is the more varietal and more in the lines of the Uncharted games, while Ada's campaign tries to enforce a little bit of stealth. All offer a great change of pace in styles but may over saturate in the action sequences. The game features QTE (Quick Time Events), which have caught a lot of flak but really isn't all that bad except when a certain enemy (just one type, you only encounter him a few times) grabs hold of you, you must rotate the left stick around really fast--and unless you know beforehand that it's going to happen, it's almost impossible to overcome--which is not a good thing for first time players.

The game also features a skill point system taking over the currency system from RE4 and 5. The skills work like perks from the Call of Duty games and can be improved by collecting skill points from fallen enemies.

The game is not overly difficult, exceedingly long (which is not a bad thing ;) ) and has good re playability. Overall, judging this game for what it is, an action game with horror elements, is superbly done in giving you an entertaining roller coaster ride. Lastly in addition, the game does a good job in the music and voice acting departments (albeit with the pretty awful dialogue I mentioned). This is a high, production value video game that delivers action to the fullest-- and if you're looking to relive the classics (which are still the better games, in my opinion--particularly the first 3) you can relive the terror or experience the series for the first time to get a feel for what made the franchise so beloved. RE6 has come a long way from it's first installment from it's survival horror elements and tank-like controls, to it's revolutionary behind the character camera feature in RE4. Though some hate the change and others embrace it, Resident Evil 6 by itself without any affiliation with the previous installments is a great game and one the best in 2012.

2 campaigns down. Looks great, plays better than ever.

Third person shooting has been modernized so that you can move and shoot. It feels more like more zoomed in uncharted now, which is a good thing. Combat is the best it's ever been. There's a quick shoot button now, and melee is less conditional and more natural. Instead of abusing tactics that result in invulnerability frames, you just have to fight well. As a result, mercenaries is similarly incredible this time around.

Same cheesy overdone style that was in RE5, but a welcome return to darker environments.

Not sure where most of the complaints are coming from. Great game, insnely compelling online or local co op. these games are perfectly paced for co op enjoyment.

Inventory is streamlined, and you turn herbs into pills. It works. :)

Overall I had a blast. Playing again on harder difficulty and getting my mercs score up!

I love all of the Resident Evil games/movies. I’m a huge fan and was a little disappointed with the gameplay for this story. Yes, I see that they’re trying something new but it doesn’t really work in the Resident Evil game universe. The quality of the game is freakin’ awesome. But I wish it gave us more control of the characters.

I've been a big fan of the Resident Evil Series at about 8 years old when it was first coming into popularity. Resident Evil has come a long long loooong way from back when I was a child with the Tank like controls and the Survival horror concept. Over time this series has surprised me, evolving to the next level with Resident evil 4 and moving on to current gen with 5. I strongly believe that Resident evil 6 has become the penultimate title in the series taking most of the best characters in the series, and causing you to experience a shared event in the narrative from massively different angles. The times you get to play through a story from another characters point of view not only changes the experiences you have, but also the way that you play the game which I strongly believe is one of the games very strong points. Leon's campaign plays like a survival horror and it surprising delivers on the scares pretty well. Chris's in knock down drag out action, and while most people despise this campaign I believe it was one of my favorites, what else would you expect from a man that has experienced "Bio-Terror" repeatedly? Handling it like a solider. Jake's campaign is a little combination of Leon and Chris's game play and it makes his story unique as well as game play unique thanks to the emphasis on hand to hand combat. the Fourth campaign is surprising and fluid and very well justified due to the character they chose to follow. Though upon criticism I find that the cover system in this game is difficult to use and mostly unneeded. That aside I praise the game from the ground up and believe that this was the best for the characters, the series, and ultimately the fans of this franchise. Don't let others make the game seem unplayable to you. You have to experience it.
