Since its beginnings on the PlayStation 2 in 1996, Resident Evil has been one of the most popular and prolific franchises in video game history. Now Capcom's Resident Evil Archives gives Wii gamers the opportunity to play classic Resident Evil games released over the series' 13-year history that they may have missed, and at a great value price. The first of these games is the original Resident Evil, re-released as Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil.
Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil is the original 2002 Resident Evil port for the Nintendo GameCube. In addition to all the content from the original 1996 PlayStation 2 version, it also features the additional rooms, areas, items and creatures that made the GameCube release an instant classic. Story The Raccoon City Police Department doesn't know what happened to the Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.) Team it sent out to investigate the Arclay Mountain area on the outskirts of the city, where a number of people have recently gone missing. The unit's helicopter seems to have crashed in the woods, and it hasn't received any contact from the squad since. The department decides to dispatch another S.T.A.R.S. unit, the Alpha team, to check things out. But something goes terribly wrong, which is code for "Zombies!" Gameplay In Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil players on the Wii take control of S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team members Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine (both recently seen in the smash hit, Resident Evil 5). Your mission is to investigate the ominous mansion at the core of the horrific disaster and uncover the secrets behind a radical, genetic research facility. With unspeakable horrors lurking around every corner, the ultimate test will be to make it out alive. Relive the thrills and terror that defined the genre of Survival Horror and launched a franchise that has sold over 40 million games worldwide. New Controls and Endings In Resident Evil for the Wii, players now have a wide range of control options, including the Wii Remote and nunchuck in combination, which lets players shake the remote to ready their weapons. In addition, the game features more than 10 different game endings. These unique endings are entirely dependent upon the decisions and actions of the player and provide for maximum replayability. with that said there are new rooms compared to the original game and new exciting puzzles to scratch your head on you first play , even both chris and jill look awesome as there models look spectacular , even the voices in this game although a bit cheesy at times but much better than the original by a long shot .
not to mention you quite the extra modes to make this game refreshing like real survival mode .
all an all this is still one of the greatest games ever made meant for true gamers , a wonderful classic in the franchise as well as Revelations
this game is timeless.
The controls and fixed camera angles are tricky and take a bit of time to get used to, but I don't consider either to be flaws to the game. Why not? Because they enhance the challenge and only contribute to the scare-factor of Resident Evil. It's not the same scare you get from hearing the gruff cries of a pitchfork-wielding Ganado (RE4) right before a murderous mob descends upon you. It's more like going blind around a dark corner while the low but ominous moan of a shuffling zombie lets you know that there's trouble nearby. Which is more frightening? I'd say the latter. The seemingly strange camera angles are used - quite effectively - to surprise the player. You could walk right into the arms of a ravenous walking corpse, and if you don't keep your wits about you or haven't mastered the controls you may make the situation even worse.
I'm no master of the genre by any means. As a matter of fact, this game frustrated me at first (and I knew what to expect from past experience). But it was the desire to confront a true survivial horror challenge and progress as far as I could in what I consider to be a significantly more difficult game than the later Resident Evil titles that brought me back. You'll run out of ammo, you'll be munched on by the reanimated dead, and you'll run dangerously low on the ever-essential typewriter ribbons that are neccessary to save your game, but if you love a challenge - and a good scare - you should get your money's worth out of this survival horror classic.
For the purpose of full disclosure: I confess that I am currently playing through the game on "easy." If you can call it easy, that is. I seem to be afforded more curative herbs and run into zombies somewhat less often, but they're still plenty hard to kill and no less disagreeable. One of the main problems I had at first was my overwhelming unfamiliarity with the layout of the mansion; it's a large place and many locations must be revisited multiple times. My other biggest problem was that I ran out of ammo faster than I could find magazines to replenish my supply. At that point (and it apparently can be done to a certain extent) I was desperately running past multiple zombies down narrow hallways or taking careful but wimpy knife swings at the decomposing heads of living corpses. Thennnn I elected to begin anew on easy. Now I'm much more familiar with my surroundings, better at evading the undead, and much farther in the game than I ever would have anticipated getting years ago when I played the original version. And I'm having good, scary fun. I'm shooting for a completion time that will unlock infinite ammo, and then I'll tackle the more difficult mode.
Update: I now have reason to believe that the weapons with infinite ammo will not unlock for me (regardless of how quickly I complete the game) because I chose the easier of the two difficulty settings at the start of my game. So if you're shooting for infinite ammo you're probably better off choosing the harder of the two difficulty settings when prompted.
