Thankfully, that is all gone. Resident Evil 7 is pure survival horror , with emphasis on horror. This is without a doubt the scariest game I have ever played. There were moments were I had actual dread and didn't want to go into the next room for fear of what was inside. And that's a good thing. While ammo isn't as scarce as the earliest game, you will still need to make every shot count and that adds to the tension, like it should.
Overall, I think RE7 is just about perfect for what it is. My only complaint is that it has almost nothing to do with Resident Evil. The game eludes to Umbrella possibly being responsible, but never outright names them. I didn't mind it too much, but it's a little irritating because it feels like this could have/should have been a new IP, but Capcom wanted name recognition for sales. But that's a minor gripe for such an excellent game.
Also, if you have the opportunity to play with quality headphones or surround sound do so. It has possibly the best video game surround sound I've ever heard and made me finally feel like the Sony 3D headphones were a worthy purchase.
