I was surprised to find a novelization, let alone a seven part series. Figured I'd check out the first book and I have to say, it's a lot of fun. Obviously if you're expecting some sort of literature here you're going to be disappointed. If you want an easy read full of suspense, monsters, and mysteries, or if you're a fan of the games, you'll enjoy yourself.
Have to give the author credit here, too. Not that easy to translate a game that's somewhat notorious for it's convoluted puzzles involving crests and keys with symbols on them into a book that makes sense, but surprisingly she pulls it off in a very believable way that rarely feels forced or outright silly.
For fans of RE that want a quick and entertaining read, it's well worth $7.
I adore all these series, Resident Evil above all, with Alien being a close second (the original film being my all-time favorite), and I always wanted to read them. As quite often I hear people say that anything written by Perry is bound to be entertaining.
And this was certainly a very entertaining read. It had a few bits of the original games scrappy dialogue, my favorite being in the first few chapters, Chris's infamous "No! Don't go!" And it also contained a few of the files from the game for added measure. Tying it together nicely.
Along with having a few of those little bits of needed and admittedly welcome fan service, it adds a lot to the characters that we didn't get to see in the original game. Such as Jill, and who she really is, and what she's done in the past.
Although, it goes without saying that the things stated in this book are canon ONLY to the books in this series, and not the main games or CG movies that officially fit in the main canon. And certainly not those atrocious live action movies...
Two of the books in this series are original stories, the book after this one being the first of which, focusing on what Rebecca does after the Spencer Mansion incident. I'm looking forward to reading that, even if it isn't canon to the games, as Rebecca is a personal favorite of mine, and I find it sad that she's been missing in the main canon, only appearing in two games (and the upcoming CG movie, I squealed when I saw the trailer, thank you Capcom).
All in all, I wholeheartedly recommend reading this book if you want a good, entertaining time passer. Just don't expect anything too new, if you've played the game, you know everything that happens in this book aside from the first three or so chapters, and the deviations made to make it flow better in written form.
Easy to read and as a die hard fan of R.E. I enjoyed the book very much.
I was worried that certain video game elements (armor keys and crests mainly) wouldn't translate very well into the book and yet Perry found a way to do it that left me happily surprised. Reading the book was almost like playing the game all those years ago and it was a ride I would suggest to any fan of the series.
Only downside I have is that Perry does bend the story line a bit (new characters, events out of order, Wesker and his involvement with the Tyrant) which as a fan left a bad taste in my mouth. However, these changes do benefit the story overall and as long as you can get past these changes it is a wonderful book!
There's action, danger, humor, this book is seriously worth every penny and then some to a fan like me. I'm curious if there will be books to the newer games 5 and 6 and 7 when it comes out. I hope so, and for all gamers who didn't care for those- I am so not one of them- I hope reading it will give you a better appreciation.
As for amazon... I saw the price as $12 dollars and then proceeded to try out the Buy-With-One-Click button for the first time. Cool right?
SIKE! It ended up being like twenty some dollars after tax and shipping... for that I could've just went to Barnes & Noble
