About the Author
Rick Hanson, Ph.D., is a psychologist, Senior Fellow of the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley, and New York Times best-selling author. His books are available in 26 languages and include Resilient, Hardwiring Happiness, Buddha’s Brain, Just One Thing, and Mother Nurture. He edits the Wise Brain Bulletin and has numerous audio programs. Lasting behavior change is tough. Personality change is even tougher. True Resilience skill development leverages our current strengths and self-awareness to adapt ourselves gradually in ways that serve our own lives, using what we’ve already got.
Simplistic, external ‘Transformational Toolsets’ exist only in Self-Help books. Answer this: did that last self-help book you bought truly transform you? If it worked, why do you need another one?
As my momma always told me, “you can always learn something if you keep an open mind”! So, it is with this book. I learned something, but the time invested in reading it was probably not a great return for the amount I learned from the book.
This book reminds me of “How to Make Friends and Influence People”, by Andrew Carnegie. Mr. Carnegie’s book was a quick and delightfully humorous read, but by the end the book I felt it was more on how to manipulate your feelings and other individuals to get what you wanted from them. It left the reader wanting to know how to really make a change in themselves and/or relationship with others that had meaningful and long-lasting difference.
The book “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, by Stephen Covey, did just that. This book was a harder read and took you down to the foundation of who you were and how you interact with other people. Most important part of this book was changing who “you” are. This book asked you to make foundational changes, not superficial changes as did Mr. Carnegie’s book.
I felt that this book, “Resilient”, was in line with Mr. Carnegie’s book, a quick read for individuals that wanted to find a “quick fix”. But I felt it lacked the perspective of getting to the “real” issues in yourself. What the “root cause” of your actions, reactions, and how to make changes in helping you deal with those “root causes”. This book, I felt, was about how to manipulate your feels and actions by which you would be building “resilience”. I did not feel like this book shared a lot of substance on how past experiences and biases had to be addressed and overcome before one can truly increase the reader’s resilience.
A book that I felt had a greater impact on me was “The Resilience Factor”. I felt that the authors took the time to build the case that resilience was not a “quick fix” but that it would take time. More, that building resilience was something that starts with “you”. To grow your resilience, you had to focus on what made you “tick” and what your “beliefs” are. This book challenges the reader to confront their past experiences, feelings, and biases, and how those impact the reader’s level of resilience. The authors stress the need of the reader to confront those issues before they can grow their level of resilience.
Overall, as I expressed at the beginning of this review, “you can learn anything from anything if you keep an open mind”. But the question is, was it worth the valuable time I have? My answer is “no”. I feel like I got a lot more value reading “The Resilience Factor”.

With his advice I have learnt about forgiveness ( a huge thing!) being grateful for all the small things in life. Judgements fall away as you realise people can only love in as much as their level of consciousness allows. With his help we grow our consciousness and become more loving, understanding and happier. Yes you have work to do but it’s not difficult and I’ve experienced the results and it’s so worth the small efforts each day.
My life changed when I came across this man and I hope you read this book and become calmer, more peaceful with yourself and others.
Think this book would be suitable for anyone who feels as though they sometimes allow the stress of external forces get the better of them and are looking for inner peace.
The only thing I am missing is more in-depth suggestions on how to implement the many practical exercises in a daily schedule or routine. While there are plenty of such exercises given, I would have found a schedule (which exercises to implement how often and for how long to have lasting results) even more practicable. I, together with a friend, have decided to choose one key practice from each chapter on a daily basis for one month. Although having practiced mindfulness for decades, I am still astonished about how effective the training suggested in this book is and about how much joy it brings to implement it.
All in all, I like the book so much, I don't hesitate to give it a full five star rating.
Especially it is a good approach for their daily education and improving traits to make them understand concepts. We all like to be happy, many of us describe happiness in different terms. If I have lots of money, or latest model of a car may be the most to many. But actual happiness is through moment to moment by experiencing, improving states, developing to traits, enriching, absorbing , turbocharging and internalizing them. We always use mind to experience them but we never want to internalize our positive experiences into our brain. Dr.Rick Hanson explains knowing how to turn passing experiences into lasting resources built into brain, which is called neuroplasticity. Thank you for the great book.
