Editorial Reviews

Review

"Refreshing and wise, Resilient takes the words of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount right out of the 'nice-but-unrealistic' box we've placed them into, and centers this rich teaching smack into our messy real lives where it belongs. Resilient is hopeful, practical, and challenging—I loved it."
(Sarah Bessey, author of Jesus Feminist and Out of Sorts)

“Beautifully written, deeply inspiring meditations to begin or end the day. Both the beginning disciple and the senior saint—and everyone in between—will find these meditations prodding, challenging, and nurturing.”
(Ronald J. Sider, author of Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger, and Senior Distinguished Professor of Theology, Holistic Ministry, and Public Policy, Palmer Seminary at Eastern University)

“Jesus’ Sermon is the kingdom made practical. The practicalities of living God’s love, of enacting God’s grace, of taking up our cross and walking in the resurrection. Sheridan's meditations on Christ's teachings are a welcome addition for anyone wanting to get caught up in this wonderful business of putting Jesus' words into practice.”
(Jarrod McKenna, national director of CommonGrace.org.au, cofounder of First Home Project and #LoveMakesAWay, activist, and pastor)

"This is a wonderful collection of short but deep reflections on what a difference Jesus' Sermon on the Mount might make to us if only we let it. Read it at your own risk. Once you have read it your life may never be the same again."
(Paula R. Gooder, Theologian in Residence, Bible Society, United Kingdom)

"From a personal journey through the Sermon on the Mount, Sheridan Voysey encourages disciples of Jesus to develop a strong spiritual heart. Sheridan writes from experience and the book will prove a blessing to all, as it certainly is for me."
(Rev. Keith V. Garner, superintendent/CEO of Wesley Mission, Sydney, Australia)

"When a heart is teachable in and through the trials of life, God grows a reservoir of wisdom through which he can move, act, and reveal. Sheridan Voysey is that heart and he shares much truth and wisdom in this book. You will be encouraged in your own heart to keep believing Jesus for your life. Thank you, Sheridan, for leading us to deeper waters of truth in Christ."
(Denalyn Lucado, coauthor with Max Lucado of Lucado Treasury of Bedtime Prayers)

"Many books have been written on the Sermon on the Mount, but few have focused on its underlying theme of resilience. Sheridan Voysey has done that now in this fine devotional. Through compelling stories and deep biblical reflection, Resilient reveals how Jesus’ teaching can build spiritual, emotional, and relational strength when put into practice. I highly recommend it."
(Arch Hart, author of Flourish, and Senior Professor of Psychology and Dean Emeritus, Graduate School of Psychology, Fuller Theological Seminary)

"When it comes to the Sermon on the Mount, Sheridan Voysey has now written the resource of first resort. What a gem!"
(Leonard Sweet, author of From Tablet to Table, weekly contributor to preachthestory.com, and professor at Drew University, George Fox University, and Tabor College)

"'So come ... whoever you are. Jesus takes all.' Resilient’s first entry grabbed me and invited me to keep reading. In digestible helpings, Sheridan Voysey serves up a bold invitation to a Jesus-shaped life that woos me to say yes ... and to keep saying yes."
(Elisa Morgan, author of The Beauty of Broken and President Emerita, MOPS International)

"There was once a teacher who drew an enormous crowd and he beckoned them to sit on a hillside and learn of him. If you are hurried, stressed, confused—if you need peace, if you’re looking for real happiness, listen to the teacher. Sheridan Voysey has captured the essence of what Jesus said to the poor, the brokenhearted—and his words echo across time and into every willing heart. May you be comforted and happy as you sit and listen to the one who loved you most."
(Chris Fabry, author of Every Waking Moment and host of Chris Fabry Live!)

From the Back Cover

Some days we wake to a world of crystal skies and bright possibilities. And other days it’s to rain pelting our windows and thunder rattling our roofs. How can we stay strong when the storms of life hit—when a spouse leaves, a client sues, unemployment strikes, or our dreams fail to come true? Is it possible not just to weather these trials, but bound back even stronger through them?

After facing his own fierce storm, author and broadcaster Sheridan Voysey tried an experiment—he would read Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount every day for a month. That experiment continued a second month, then a third, as he discovered Jesus’ astounding invitation for weak people to become strong, little people to become great, all of us to find resilience by putting these radical teachings into practice.

Rich with stories and deep with insight, Resilient is designed to recalibrate your callings, relationships, spiritual practices, and life choices. Join Sheridan Voysey in following the One who promises this: Though the rain comes in torrents and the winds beat against you, you will stand, not collapse. You will be resilient.

This is a book of 90 readings tracing the theme of resilience through the Sermon on the Mount. Some might call it a devotional or simply a book of meditations but how one defines it doesn’t really matter. It is a book that challenges the reader to invest time in Jesus words to gain understanding and with the Spirit’s help move from head knowledge to action.

The book came about as a result of Sheridan walking through a season when he read the Sermon on the Mount every day. He began journaling and then writing some blog posts on his reflections.

There are six sections that generally follow the three chapters of the Sermon: Your Invitation, Your Calling, Your Relationships, Your Practices, Your Choices and Your Resilient Life.

Each reading starts with a verse, from the Sermon or other, a page and half of contemplation using a real life example or one from the Bible, and then ends with two questions to ponder and answer.

It is a book to be read slowly to allow Jesus’ words combined with Sheridan’s reflections to percolate. To read it too quickly would miss much of the power of its content.

I particularly appreciated section six: Your Resilient Life. Living a Jesus-Shaped life leads to resilience especially when life is tough. Voysey outlines four factors that researchers have identified as leading to human resilience: Emotional fitness, Family fitness, Social Fitness and Spiritual fitness. None of these are that surprising. Positive emotions, healthy relationships, bodies and minds plus the meaning and purpose that comes from serving someone greater than ourselves.

Besides the quality reflection of Jesus’ words, the one aspect of these readings that sets it apart is the challenge to do something about them.

This is a collection of devotions on the Sermon on the Mount. Sheridan is a master writer of devotions: his tone is pastoral without being sentimental; his illustrations are rooted in real life, and he digs deep into the word without being over-intellectual. It is the classic devotional style: a verse at the beginning to reflect upon, with a short but meaty commentary, and questions or quotes at the end. It doesn’t simply go through the Sermon on the Mount, but dots around using several themes in the sermon. It is a thoughtful and enjoyable journey, and great if you’re looking for devotional material.

Based around the Beatitudes (Jesus', Sermon on the Mount), the book is set out in short devotional chapters. These chapters start with a Bible verse then into Sheridan's commentary and reflections. Going on to give you a couple of Questions for you to relect on at the end of each chapter.

I found each chapter easy to read and understand. Each devotional was challenging and the questions allowed me to reflect on how each chapter connected to my own life.

Sheridan's writing style is pastoral and personable and his commentaries really make Jesus' words relevant to us in our lives today.

I'd certainly recommend this for your own personal devotional time or for a group setting.

This is a hard book to get through. That does sound like a negative, but it isn't. Several really great things about this book:
1) The "chapters" are written in brief, 2 pg, snippets, including verses, that expound on really, really deep Christian thought. Not just pablum that we've been exposed to as Christians over the years, but real heady, and heart-deep stuff;
2) I've only gotten through the first 90 pages or so. I've had to re-read most of them, and include my kids now, to prompt discussion. There is tons of insight, which leads to further pondering and reflection. It's good and inspired.
3) I've already purchased 2 copies, and will buy more to give away to friends.
This book goes right along with the "Resurrection Year" theme, and the practical and biblical ways we need to view, handle, and still glorify God in the difficult times, our very own resurrection year(s). Great job, Sheridan!

Straight away it’s worth noting this is not a Christian “self-help” book. Speaking from the experience of his own wounds Sheridan doesn’t pretend that trials and troubles won’t come, that the storms of life will rage. What his writing offers, however, is an insight into how Jesus’ famous words can be applied to our daily lives, can permeate our souls and help the Holy Spirit bring us healing, purpose & a desire to seek out the life we were created to live.

Dividing the message of the Sermon into six sections, Sheridan explores:
“Your Invitation” – Jesus request for us to ‘come’;
“Your Calling” – what Jesus has called us to be and do;
“Your Relationships” – Jesus sanctification of each part of human relations, seeking to make each thing ‘Holy’;
“Your Practices” – Jesus guidance on the Way to live out His purpose for our lives;
“Your Choices” – Jesus guidance, instruction and warnings across the decisions we make, big and small, in our daily lives;
“Your Resilient Life” – guidance for moving Jesus message from our head to our hearts and living out a life shaped by Him no matter what is thrown at us.

Along the way there are questions to ponder, allowing the reader to focus their thoughts on what has been said. Each section concludes with a strong summary which directs us back to Jesus’ desire to help us build the resilience that will see us through the trials of being His disciples, His friends, His people.

Throughout the book Sheridan’s writing is smooth and at times poetic, giving memorable quotes and images, all adding to the impression of exploring the text in the company of a warm, learned friend.
