Editorial Reviews
From Booklist
Most collections of pop culture reviews are too ephemeral to have much value in libraries, but White's agenda gives this one uncommon substance. For 10 years, White has voiced his political and social convictions as arts editor of Brooklyn's black weekly, the City Sun. His stated intention is to "defend and agitate." Here, he surveys a decade's worth of mostly films, but also hip-hop records and plays, from Purple Rain through Forrest Gump. His is a highly radicalized perspective in which the black and white keys in The Piano (the movie) have an "unexplored racial subtext." If a focus that educes such observations is White's limitation, it is also what sets him apart. He raises issues and ideas others are unlikely to have considered. While railing against U.S. culture's indifference to the work of African American artists, he expresses a passion that is too scarce in the rarefied realm of arts criticism. Consider this provocative volume as an alternative to other pop culture titles, especially in libraries with strong black culture collections. Gordon Flagg

The Resistance...the Beastie Boys a white group mocking black culture is the "Resistance" but he mocks Living Colour (out of jealousy of Vernon Reid)..typical self hating loser

As a Cinema and Photography Graduate and film enthusiast,
I find this book to be nothing more than SENSATIONALISM.
Armond White can't see past his own nose when it comes to criticizing films.
White, lacks the ability to focus on anything positive.
He spends too much time and energy on his own personal issues
and not enough on how the films exist in society.
EXAMPLE:
Eddie Murphy in "Coming To America"
White absolutely hates this movie and how it depicts African Americans AND Africans.
It's almost as if White is incapable of seeing the humor in stereotypes.
This view point becomes very exhausting after reading about only a few movies.
His theories and insights are skewed, to say the very least.
I'm sorry I spent my time and money on this book.
In fact, I turned around and sold it on here, paying someone to take it out of my house.
I would have thrown it away, but I just can't pull myself to waste paper like that.
This book would make a great Yule Log.
But it is well constructed, a very sturdy book. Could use it to prop up your furniture.
Why didn't I think of that earlier?!

This guy proclaims "Norbit" is superior to "Get Out."
If that's your (misguided, purposely obtuse) jam, read on.
I hope the National Review is paying him well to be this disingenuous.

Would not recommend. Just an ax-grinder trying to capitalize on people's yearning to hate.

I just felt as if the writing was subpar and even though it is a collection of articles, I got sick of reading his writing style of a 6th grader and returned it to borders. I just felt attacked as a young white male reading this collection written by a token angry black man.
Don't bother buying it, you will have to return it.

Armand White is a talentless nobody from a nothing publication writing the most inane reviews of movies in history. Now, in addition to polluting Rotten Tomatoes with his stupidity, he's published a book that will undoubtedly be a hit in mental wards and crack dens the world over. I know, I know, this review doesn't sound too informative, so here's the "helpful" part- do you have an IQ above 60? If not, this book is perfect for you. Enjoy!
