Every year I tell my self I'm going to loose 100 pounds, and the way I'm going to do it is by giving up Diet Coke and all sorts of sugary treats. Come January 1st I tell myself I'll just have some today (it's a holiday), and January 2nd I tell myself just this week, and come December - You know...
My takeaway from this book are two quick comments early into the text.
1) You've got to set a date to get started.
2) "If you have a large habit you'd like to change, the simplest solution is to break it down into smaller habits and tackle them one by one."
Pretty simple stuff. Not rocket science, but it all makes sense. Set a date, and make a series of smaller goals 2 pounds a week, ten pounds a month, don't just focus on taking away the things you like. Which brings us to one other important point, replace a bad habit with a good habit, so if I want to stop drinking Diet Coke I need to substitute something good - water, milk, whatever. Doing this help will help me build a healthier new habit.
No promises or anything, but this just may be the year I keep that New Year's Resolution.
The book starts out explaining the importance of focusing on habits, why willpower is limited (and often fails when misused), and how to go about actually changing your long standing habits. Then the second half of the book lays out practical, month-to-month steps you can take to improve the most common areas people resolve to change.
While the book is centered around New Year's resolutions, the advice is obviously relevant for anyone looking to make a change in their life. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a blueprint on how to make lasting, healthy changes in their life.
It's only Jan. 2nd and already 2014 is better than 2013! (Thanks to this book.)
I haven't read that many books on goals/resolutions, but of the few I HAVE read -- this one literally blew them away!
It contains awesome tips on everything you need to know to make (and keep!) successful New Year's Resolutions.
If you want to instantly change your life forever, I strongly recommend you check out S.J. Scott's "Resolutions That Stick" as it is guaranteed to transform your life.
Thank you so much for this awesome book, S.J.!

I would recommend this to anyone who is struggling with bad habits or a trail of failed new year's resolutions.
