Editorial Reviews

I just knew once I started reading this book, I wouldn't be able to put it down. Indeed that's exactly what happened. Pastor Evan writes in such a way that his thoughts and experiences are totally relatable, but at the same time you find yourself awed by his ability to hold fast to God's promises and to keep his faith even as the shadow of death looms near. The "fox named cancer" may not raid all of our homes, but we have all found ourselves battling grief and despair at some point in our lives, and Pastor Evan writes about it in such a way that you feel the pain alongside him, but you also feel the hope that refuses to surrender. While this is a book about loss, as the title describes, it is also a book about love. Evan and Danielle's story is one that makes me long to experience such a love, yet leaves me hopeful to know that Biblical, Christ-centered love actually exists in marriage relationships. Romance and Christian love are not mutually exclusive and it is so encouraging to read the story of a couple holding on to God and to each other through the ultimate highs and lows life can bring. --Bobbi Jo R

--God is sovereign. God is good. I hurt. All three are true.-- You might want to read this book next to a box of tissues. I'm not going to pretend it's a light read. Evan writes about the life and death of his wife, about suffering and grief and what it means to hold on to Christ through both. It's personal yet pastoral. A story you haven't read yet a story that will touch your own, even if your pain is different from his. I think you should read it even (and maybe especially) if your first thought is --I don't want to think about that kind of pain.-- It challenged and encouraged me, and it's well-written to boot. --Rachel Joy Watson

I have so enjoyed this book. As a person who has suffered great loss in my life I'm just so grateful for Evan and his willingness to share such a personal thing as grief, suffering, romance...prolific loss ...with all of us. It is taking me more time than I should to read this because I have to stop and really think through the Gospel moments, to cry, to really marvel at what God is doing through this book. It has been a means of grace to me. Truly a blessing and definitely accomplishes what Evan stated he wanted to do...change the conversation in the church regarding suffering. To state clearly that true godly romance isn't a bad thing and doesn't need to go away. I really enjoy random things like the funny quips in the foot notes lol. And the dry humor throughout the book. So much good biblical material on such difficult topics, topics that most people avoid either out of a lack of sympathy/empathy, awkwardness, or maybe nonchalance I don't know. It is such a vulnerable place to share issues of the heart like the ones in this book. That alone gives me a great deal of respect for the work done here. It is definitely one of those books I will read multiple times which places this book in very good company! Please purchase and read. Soli Deo Gloria! --Keiko
