The author explains everything you need in your resume and includes details that other resume-writing books might fall short of. In Chapter 3 “The Heading”, the book doesn’t just simply say to include your name, address, phone number, and email. Most people can figure out you need to do this from looking online or taking a class on resume writing. Instead, he breaks it down in simple terms and includes great tips on how to make everything LOOK GREAT on paper. For example, under “The Heading”, you can go to how to write your “NAME”. The author mentions to “Center your name at the very top of the page”, “Choose a font size about 6 to 8 sizes larger than the font size for the rest of the resume”, and “List your name in bold font”. Furthermore, he answers important questions about whether to include your middle name and what to do if you have a nick name. It is these HELPFUL TIPS that you will find throughout the ENTIRE BOOK and really make this book stand out.
I was delighted to find out that “Resumes that Stand Out” included chapters on cover letters and career fairs. Don’t let the term “bonus chapters” fool you. The chapter on cover letters gives you all the information you need to know to get your cover letter done TODAY. It also includes examples of cover letters to help you out!!! In terms of the career fair, this guy really knows his stuff. It is obvious that he has a lot of personal experience and has talked to recruiters. I can almost guarantee you will learn something on how to prepare for a career fair that you didn’t know before.
My only critique is that the front cover mentions it is written for college students and recent grads. This book would be COMPLETELY appropriate for any level job that requires you to create a one page resume. My husband has personally used the information from this book to land engineering and management jobs at top-tier oil and gas companies, almost 10 years out of college! I have been using this book as a graduation gift for high school students as well! Highly, Highly recommend this one. A very cheap price for securing a successful job!
