"A poignant and inspiring story laced with wit and grit. Barber deftly captures the paradoxical spirit of West Texas within these pages--the beauty and freedom of its open skies and expansive horizons standing in stark relief against the suffocating, sometimes barbarous prejudices that still linger in many of its small towns. Resurrecting Lazarus, Texas is a life-affirming story about the transformative power of hope, perseverance, and friendship. It reminds all of us to savor and celebrate the journey, no matter the destination." P.S. Baber, author of Cassie Draws the Universe
"If you have a soft spot in your heart for the underdog, and if you love sports and the challenges that come with it, this story is for you. You will be drawn into Barber's tale by the memorable characters. The Lady Longhorns will make you think, but best of all, they will make you care. In the end, you will have taken a soul-searching journey of your own." Larry Dierker, Major League Baseball player and author of This Ain't Brain Surgery and My Team

When I first picked up this book, I wasn't expecting what I got out of it. I was expecting a so-so book. I was very surprised, and happy, to find that my expectations were wrong. This book isn't just inspiring, it's well-written to the point I wondered if it was, in fact, a true story, which I'm still wondering about. It doesn't say "true story" anywhere (I don't think), but, regardless, it felt that way. When the book ends, I couldn't help but want to continue on with the lives of each character, wondering what happens to them if the story continued on. Nonetheless, this book hits the heart, gets it pumping and almost gets it to stop during several pages. I found myself not wanting to put it down and when I did put it down, I was excited when I picked it back up to read. Yes, this book was great on all levels.
I give this book 5 stars and would recommend it to everyone. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a movie deal in the making.
I also have to say that the ending is wonderful; the idea about the "journey". One of my favorite poems is How You Live Your Dash and this book is a lot like this prose. The poem is about what you really should value as a coach during your career; that time frame between the year you started and the year you retired (with the "dash" representing the years in between).
This book reminds me of the real reason I coach. Thank you so much for such a great novel. I am putting in my bookshelf in my office along side all the other books I have, written by Coach K, Dean Smith, John Wooden, etc...
I hope this one becomes a movie!
The reader gets a glimpse of the roller coaster ride that makes up the life of a coach. You will find yourself routing for a basketball team, starving for a seat at the local diner, and watching a young man grow into a professional.
Two thumbs up!
The only thing I disliked about this book is that it ended...I wanted so badly to find out what happened to all of the characters. Though I suppose that's the purpose of a good book...to keep you wanting more.
