THE BAND'S FANS WERE OVERJOYED WHEN IN SUMMER 2020 RAGE FRONTMAN PEAVY WAGNER PRESENTED THE GROUP'S NEW LINE-UP FEATURING TWO GUITARISTS, ANNOUNCING A RETURN TO THE CONSTELLATION THAT HAD RECORDED CLASSICS SUCH AS BLACK IN MIND AND END OF ALL DAYS.Rage have recorded twelve new songs covering a stylistic range that could hardly be more characteristic of the band, from raw thrash metal tracks like ´Virginity' (also thefirst video), ´The Age Of Reason' and ´Extinction Overkill' through midtempo pieces such as ´Arrogance And Ignorance' and ´Monetary Gods' to the straightforward ballad´Black Room' which balances things out. "Rage fans get exactly what they want on Resurrection Day, plus a surprise or two," promises Peavy, mentioning in particular´Travelling Through Time', a number that explores the extremes between bludgeoning "shoot-em up grooves" (quote Peavy) and epic moments. So we can look forward to a very special Rage album, and of course eventually also to live shows. Provided that the situation allows it, Peavy and his men are set to embarkon a major European tour in November 2021. With Resurrection Day on their setlist, the shows are guaranteed to turn into highly explosive events!

I was disappointed to see that Marcos Rodriguez had opted to depart the band for personal reasons given that the three albums he did with Rage triumphantly restored the band's undeniable greatness at creating melodic metal that is actually pretty darn heavy. I mean no disrespect to Victor Smolski, who is a phenomenally gifted technical player, but his style was never the best fit for Rage. Well, not to ever be kept down for long, Peter "Peavy" Wagner brought on board not one but two new guitarists and the result is an absolute outstanding addition to the rather expansive Rage catalogue. The production is crisp and powerful, just the way this type of music should be recorded, and the band, despite the recent personnel changes, appears to be in TOP FORM. There isn't a weak track on Resurrection Day and the whole thing bristles with energy, enthusiasm and conviction. Peavy knows how to write & construct terrific songs that flat out rock and his voice has really lost nothing despite the many years of touring & performing.
I fell in love with this band back in 1988 when "Perfect Man" was first released and have been a loyal, faithful fan ever since. If, like me, you somehow missed the Refuge "Solitary Men" album from a few years ago, note that it's a reunion of the classic lineup (Peavy, Manni & Chris). It's a terrific album in its own right and very much a Rage album by any other name.
The title track, "Virginity", "Monetary Gods", "Arrogance & Ignorance" and "Extinction Overkill" are currently some of my favorite tracks on this but to my ears, the epic centerpiece is "Traveling Through Time". This is new territory for Rage with its Gaelic undertones but it is an absolute stomper that should translate unbelievably well in a live setting.
If you are a Rage fan, you will be pleased. If you are not already a Rage fan, this album is a great place to start.
