I just had the sweates thing happen that almost brought tears to my eyes. I say almost because I am a man and a manly man. I will not admit I teared up!
So, as all know, I am a geek and into GMRS hobby. I put up a repeater in town. I primarily done it because my kids like to run around town and play with other kids. Life in a small town is like that. I had been giving them GMRS walki talkies to stay in contact. I have been having issues with them getting out of range. So I put up a repeater. There is no where in town that they can go now and be out of range. This does require a family GMRS license to do, which is easy to obtain with a 35 dollar licensing fee through the FCC. I decided to list my repeater on AR GMRS website and mygmrs.com for other GMRS licensees to see and use too. A repeater after all, is a valuable resource and very useful in an emergency and I don't mind sharing. I thought I was the only licensed GMRS in Piggott and there were no others.
I was wrong. I was setting at my desk drinking a soda when my radio keyed up. A weak voice gave their call sign. I could tell it was a weak old man. Ive worked in the medical field long enough that I could tell this was likely a sickly man. The weak old man called out asking for the repeater owner. I answered him and told him to go ahead with his radio traffic.
The weak voice explained:
Weak voice:
I am so and so, I found this repeater on AR GMRS repeater web page and I was trying to get ahold of the owner. I am old and can't afford a cell phone. I bought 2 GMRS radios a long time ago when I used to be in the hobby. Now I use them to stay in contact with my wife as she walks around town. I keep loosing her when she walks to Harps because it's out of range. I programmed this radio with the private line codes you listed to access the repeater to see if it worked. I see it works. I was wanting to offer $20 dollars a month to you so me and my wife could use it when she walks around town to get the things we need because we don't have a car either. Is it OK with you if we use your repeater to stay in contact? I promis to not bother you much!
Me: *Wife looks at me and said "Don't you dare take that old man's money!!!". Her eyes started to tear up too.
Also me: I key up the radio and say "Sir you and your wife are more then welcome to use my repeater as much as you like. You will not bother us at all. That is why I listed it online. It's public access as far as I am concerned. By the way, you keep your money. As far as getting out of range you won't have that issue anymore. Also, if your wife ever needs a ride, you just let us know. I do ask that if there are any issues with the repeater to let my wife or I know". This lead to a much longer conversation about how I work as a Paramedic out of town and part time in town. Apparently he was one of my patients at one point. He went on to explain how I have taken him to Menphis many times for an unmentioned life threatening illness (I knew he was sick, I could tell).
Anyways, it was the fact that such a weak voice was asking for so little that made my night.
Disclaimer: As with all things GMRS, line of sight it key so your experience may vary.
Only downside is the duplexer robs about half the output power, which is to be expected on a small 10W device, but it’s still a great setup.
Coverage on a 35' push up pole on a silo.
Really helped our portable radios along with increased our coverage in our vehicles from around 3 miles to 9 miles.
Really great product and worth the buy.
I also had it deployed at a summer camp in a heavily forested area on a 20' pole and it worked very well for over a month. The unit only had to be rebooted once when the squelch got stuck open.
All and all, this is a great starter for folks playing around with GMRS radio.
