Bookish and proper Percival Tunstell finds himself out of his depth when floating cities, spirited plumbing, and soggy biscuits collide in this delightful conclusion to NYT bestselling author Gail Carriger's Custard Protocol series.
Percival Tunstell loves that his sister and her best friend are building themselves a family of misfits aboard their airship, the Spotted Custard. Of course, he'd never admit that he belongs among them. He's always been on the outside - dispassionate, aloof, and hatless. But accidental spies, a trip to Japan, and one smart and beautiful doctor may have him renegotiating his whole philosophy on life.
Except hats. He's done with hats. Thank you very much.

From the Author
The Spotted Custard crew is back for one last rollicking adventure! Watch me tie up all those loose threads. Look out for appearances from beloved Parasolverse characters (and some less beloved) and learn everyone's secrets... the hard way.
Percy, of course, could care less.
Or could he?
This one is absolutely and utterly for YOU, Gentle Reader. Hopefully, you'll be as caught up as possible by the time this book releases. I'm giving you fair warning.
This book is mad cap fun and absolutely hilarious no matter what. But you'll get all the inside jokes and cookies only if you've read the Parasolverse back catalogue.
Gear up, you're in for a particularly puffy final float!
You have been warned.

After I read the first Parasol Protectorate series, I thot it was so great and wonderful I didn't even want to spoil my satisfaction by starting a series that was all girls, in fashiony school or whatever.... I mean, it's amusing when Alexia cares about proper attire & such , but I couldn't fathom having the be the main backdrop of the story... heh. Then some time later I found myself hankering for a good story with steampunk and a delightful sense of adventure and propriety..... and either in a blurb or in a downloaded sample I ran to the opening bit to the first finishing school book and realized
Oh, this is going to be fun!
And yes it was . Just a marvelous glorious romp , with some precursor history of character we already know and love...ah, so good.
So of course, I was in no mood to spoil it by reading the series about the kids, and it sounded more romance laced than the others... sigh, no thanks.....
But then after some time I found myself hankering for.... (ditto the above)...
And Oh My Goodness this series is a masterpiece! From the get-go at a party, Rue and Prim who we last saw as babies have come into their own. They are definitely their mothers daughters, yet not just copies of previously loved characters to make another story, but have made themselves their own women and with a not seemingly contrived except by in world influencers merry band of Misfits find some extraordinary Adventures. And because they are related, our beloved characters from before do get to come in ... oh that was hard, when Pa first is all unrecognizing; I actually wept a bit . But of course the solution was there all along ....
They do find love as well, but again not (very) contrived and what is , well it's been a 3-series saga full of marvelous contrivances so what's a bit of new spark on a magical dirigible.....😉
The only thing I did not like it is more my fault than anything I suppose - whenever I got to the end of a book, Kindle nicely let me know I can start the next one so I instantly clicked Read Now .... so I totally thot I was on the second-to-last one when I slammed headlong into the devastatingly sudden epilogue like an airship hitting an abrupt aethyr cross-current.
But... But... can't be over, drupe had finally gelled and mostly figured out who they were going to be to themselves and to the team and the crew, and What happens next, where is the new adventure and supernatural discovery?! Are these friends of mine with whom I just spent such an amazing time with going to just fade into memory with no more wondrous adventure? I cried again at the heartache of it all. Now, the ending isn't as graceless as all that, I did that to myself by believing there was another book to read in just a few seconds. Our heroic group has a lovely sailing off into the sunset moment before the tender-but-let's-not-become-maudlin epilogue. Which gives me hope because a truly great setting down the pieces, or tying up the threads of a story epic (lord of the rings comes to mind, but there are others too) is generally a final close of the curtain. This... well maybe, if we are so lucky, we may yet get to pick up the story again after a skin-of-the-teeth (and balloon) refuelling and dive again up into the aethyr currents to see where they take us... well currents and/or Akeldama, influencing Aunts, tyrannically loving parents, etc....
M'lady Gail Carriger, thank you for putting your stories out here, our lives are richer for it. May the muse visit you again and may you be blessed with fulfillment and enjoyment spinning out more tales

The plot of "Reticence " is fairly straightforward locate and rescue The Wallflower, a spy, and investigate a new shifter species in Japan. Rue is pregnant, Prim newly in love and Percy is well just Percy. What makes this a strong entry in the series is the reunion of all the major players. Rue is the perfect character to bridge all the generations. The reunion was my favorite aspect of the book. The older generation has a special place in my heart. Dare I say, my favorite. These young bucks know nothing of the struggle. *in my grump old man voice* Also, the introduction of Dr. Arsenic Ruthven and her parentage is a major whopper. I instantly redownload a book in the Delightfully Deadly series to reread.

Percy and Arsenic take center stage. I adored Percy's neurodivergence. His beauty comparisons to insects and animals tickled me to no end. Arsenic is just as unconventional as Percy, the perfect tinder match for the oft misunderstood scientist. She's an awesome addition to the Parasolverse.

Gail continues to build upon the Parasolverse to the point of saturation ,term used in the series, and I'm here for all of it! In "Retience " the adventure is fun and the science is confusing, but that's always the case with me and science. However, Gail continues to utilize her characters in unexpected ways in the Parasolverse. 🍶

But then I was very won over by the introduction of Arsenic (as in Finishing School Presha's daughter) to the Spotted Custard crew, and seeing some of these characters from a different perspective.
The first half of the novel is a bit of love letter to the fans during the wedding scenes. Lovely and funny! And we also get to see how Alexia and Connall have settled in to retirement in Egypt in Alexander's fabled city.
But I also truly enjoyed the adventure of the Custard in a floating Edo steampunk Japan. Not many steampunk adventures set there, for sure. In Japan, we find more shape shifters in the form of foxes and dragons. Interesting! I could've done with a little more of that actually.
So that was all a very good adventure in itself. I've now read most of the Parasolverse novels, and this honestly made me want to cry a bit (and I never cry) because I am sad to leave this world of supernaturals, preternaturals and metanaturals and the spies. Carriger has really pulled off a most convincing feat of world building. I hope there will be other related but different stories to tell from this universe.

This time on the romance block it's Percy, who, I admit, I had been digging as ace or aro (and whom I continue to dig as aspec), so it was gonna take someone special to capture his heart, and mine on his behalf.
Well, Arsenic (just take a beat to love that name) did the trick from page one. She's a perfect fit for the family of misfits aboard the Custard: quick, smart, an oddity to society, unwilling to judge others, and a big heart coupled with a laid back acceptance of whatever is happening around her.
She's a great match for Percy, if he could only move past his lack of experience and actually get with the kissing!
The rest of the book is, as expected, ridiculous and fun. Floating cities, more new shapeshifters, tassles, fainting vampire queens, Akeldama being...well, Akeldama.
Carriger shows, as always, that she can write books set in the past (albeit a steampunk version of it) whilst refusing to cis-, het- and whitewash everything in it. Each oddball is written with love, care and respect, and I look forward to this in any new works as much as I look forward to the stories themselves.
All in all, another favourite for the reread list! And I can't wait for the next.

I did notice a small number of possible typos, but it’s possible that they are just the language used at that time - I really wouldn’t know! They don’t detract from the enjoyment of the excellent story, so a very minor niggle really.
I can’t really say too much more without spoilers, but I love being in Percy’s head, I want to be Arsenic, and Spoo is great! Lots of old favourites and future characters popping up to say hi. A satisfying adventure and rescue. Politeness, fisticuffs and tea. Everything we love and expect from a Gail Carriger.
Highly recommended. I’d give more than 5 out of 5 stars if I could.

This is the last book in the 4 part Custard Protocol series, a steam punk extravaganza where a group of characters travel the world. It will make more sense if you read the others first as there are character developments and storyline that flow through them all.
This series follows on from the Finishing School series, and Soulless series both of which are brilliant but can be read separately and characters from each appear in this series and a lot show up in this book. You don't have to read those first but it feels so good to meet up with these wonderful friends.

All in all I would highly reccomend this book.
