Alex and Olivia bond over their losses. Each has lost a beloved mother under tragic circumstances. Both take more of a responsibilty than they should in their mother's death. Each still carries guilt and pain. It has shaped both of their lives and kept them from getting close to others as an adult. Their souls recognize one another. I think that from the beginning, they started healing the other, filling the empty spaces in the other's soul. This relationship was healing before it turned into something much more.
This story echoes much of the original Retreat to Me. Olivia and Alex are the newest generation to find each other at Carter Ridge following in the footsteps of her famous grandparents. Both are artists in their own medium and both are carrying emotional baggage. It's not an easy start and there are obstacles along the way. Still there is something special between the two and magic that can't be denied at Carter Ridge. It's a wonderful story full of healing, hope, and love. Olivia and Alex are unique, delightful characters . Olivia's pain was overwhelming at times. I didn't understand why she wasn't angry as well, but the pain definitely consumed her. Alex was fascinating. His colorful view of the world was so cool. Their story was compelling. The attraction, the fight against it, the falling, the sex, the obstacles and danger, the retreat... I could not put the book down. This book captured me just like the first one did. It was such a rewarding read. I highly recommend this 2 book series. It's so good and leaves you happy long after you finish the final page of the second book.
I also couldn’t have been happier with the ending. It was beautifully written and not what I was expecting. The extended time frame of the epilogue was something I don’t see much and I enjoyed the amount of closure it brought. Very well done! Thank you, Christina Benjamin!
