If it were up to me, Fr. Knox, born just two years before the death of Cardinal Newman, whom he resembles in his life's journey, would be on his way to official sainthood, if only because of his preaching skills. This series, given at retreats oh so many years ago, is astounding in depth and theology. The last one I read, about death, the death of Christ and our own deaths, not a finish, but an achievement--for our future in heaven becomes secure if we understand what His death really meant--is so splendidly presented as to provide on the spot hope. Monsignor Knox has become a constant companion. To me, this is as meaningful a book as the Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis.

As always, Msgr. Knox writes perfectly, clearly, and movingly. He brings hope during dark times, and reminds us that we are not the top of the spiritual food chain. My only regret is that he did not live long enough to write a sequel to this book, and a sequel to the sequel. It is a wonderful book for believers and, if you are not a believer, read this and you will become one. Which is the very best thing you could possibly do.

Msgr. Knox lived in an era when sin was a lot less gory. No abortuaries a la Gosnell et al, no serial rapist/killers,at least none the press went gaga over, no Manson Family, no Weathermen, you get the drift. Consequently his retreat conferences can concentrate on the kind of personal, day-to-day sins and spiritual problems that are so embarrassing to confess for the 14th time in a row. He writes from the perspective of a confessor/spiritual counselor and some of his insights, if not exactly original, are clearly and incisely put., e.g. the meaning of today, the effects of the fear of death. I found some of his illustrations, such as the moths on the windowpane, very clarifying. His prose is also excellent and devoid of theological showing off. I had a few minor problems with his viewpoint on some things and he screwed up a Latin translation that was simple enough for even me to figure out. On the whole, worth reading if you are seriously interested in your own spiritual growth.

I really want to give it 4.5 stars. Its a very old book written in the 1950's. the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that Msgr. Knox is a pre-Vatican !! priest and small bits of his information is no longer in practice. My favorite thing he does during his talk about the Villa Dolorosa, he reminds us that in all likelihood, Jesus was one of 3 people who were carrying crosses to their deaths on the same day, and what might have been on the minds of the 2 criminals who shared the path that day. interesting to think about.

Great book where 3 or more retreats can be formulated. The topics in the book can be well fitted for different levels of spirituality. The topics are well discussed and can be useful guide to develop different retreats for the lay.
