The reason some reviews claim these cables work great and others say that they don't work at all is because the cables are not compatible with all official NES controllers. I have three, but the cable only works with two of them. At first I thought it didn't work at all until I tested it with the other controllers and found that they functioned fine.
I have seen this behavior in other off-brand controller devices. For example, the Mayflash SNES controller-to-USB adapter does not work with all SNES controllers. I have no idea why this is; there may be an understandable reason, but it is nonetheless very disappointing. I'm glad it works with some of my controllers, but others will not be so lucky.
Also, as other reviews have mentioned, the male head on the cable is too large and requires a lot of force to insert or remove from the NES controller port.
The cable I received seems to match pictures of the Retro-bit brand cable, so I assume that's what I got. If you can find a brand other than Retro-bit, try those instead, but like with a lot of these kinds of retro accessories, you might be stuck with this. It's cheap, so it's not much of a problem to buy one to try, but they are far from a perfect product.
