About the Author

A lifelong fan of comic books, video games, movies, science fiction, and the like, Brett Weiss has published professionally since 1997 and today is a full-time freelance writer. Weiss is the author of six books: The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987 (Schiffer, 2014); Retro Pop Culture A to Z: From Atari 2600 to Zombie Films (Amazon, 2014); Filtered Future and other Dark Tales of Science Fiction and Horror (Amazon Kindle, 2012); Classic Home Video Games 1972-1984 (McFarland, 2007); Classic Home Video Games 1985-1988 (McFarland, 2009); and Classic Home Video Games 1989-1990 (McFarland, 2011). Brett Weiss has been a professional writer since 1997. He’s the author of 13 books, mostly about the NES, Super NES, Atari 2600, ColecoVision, Sega Genesis, and other retro games and gaming consoles. His latest book is The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1988-1998. He's also got a YouTube show, "Tales from a Retro Gamer."

Weiss has written more than 1600 published articles for such publications as Fangoria, Filmfax, Game Informer, the Comics Buyer's Guide, and Old School Gamer, among many others. Weiss also has a national column in AntiqueWeek called The Pop Culture Collective.

When not writing, Weiss enjoys reading, hiking, cycling, playing basketball and tennis, watching movies, going to museums, collecting video games, listening to rock ’n roll, obsessing over the psychedelic '60s, and hanging out with his family.

Fun! Fun! Fun! And More Fun!

No matter how old or how young you are, there is something to enjoy and reminisce about in this book. Remember the Atari? Remember "JAWS"? Remember He-Man? Remember "Land of the Lost"? You'll find all of that and a LOT more in this great and fun book. Brett Weiss has done a great job of picking out a lot of different shows, movies, comics, toys, cartoons, icons and other things from all ranges of generations to write about. And you'll have a lot of fun reading about them. And after you do, you might buy one of those things. I remember seeing the "Superman Vs. Muhammad Ali" comic when it first came out and laughing at it. Then I read the chapter in this book about that comic. I was so impressed with the behind-the-scenes story that Brett Weiss wrote, that I went out and bought a copy of that comic!

a thorough rundown of pop culture mid 70s- mid 80s

OK, I've read more than I can handle about Atari and KISS, but luckily Mr. Weiss *really* mines the depths for the 35-45 gang. I've scoured the Internet over a decade for this kind of stuff, and not only is it convenient to have it all in one volume, but good grief does this book have a lot of "I forgot about that!" items. This reminds me a bit of those books about monster movies I used to take out of the grade school library, but instead of just monster movies Retro Pop Culture A-Z has... pretty much everything.

Mit RETRO POP CULTURE A TO Z legt Brett Weiss eine wirklich spaßige und sehr unterhaltsam geschriebene Aufzählung zahlreicher Nerd- / Geek- /Pop-Kultur Phänomene aus den goldenen 80ern vor. Die einzelnen Kapitel sind ausführlich und gehen definitiv ins Detail, weswegen auch Fans des jeweiligen Phänomens noch ein paar neue Fakten erfahren dürften. Garniert wird alles mit persönlichen Anekdoten des Autors, in welchen er jeweils seine schönste Erinnerung zum jeweiligen Thema kurz umreißt.

Insgesamt gefiel mir RETRO POP CULTURE A TO Z definitive gut – Weiss kann unterhaltsam schreiben, und er liefert inhaltlich mehr ab, als man selbst mit einer kurzen Internetrecherche herausfinden kann. Selbstverständlich ist das Buch (was man ihm nicht vorwerfen kann) sehr auf die amerikanische Pop- / Geek-Kultur in den 80ern fokussiert… welche sich in zahlreichen Punkten von der deutschen und europäischen unterschied, schließlich waren z.B. Spielkonsolen wie das NES hierzulande bei weitem nicht so populär oder Arcade-Automaten unter 18 Jahren normalerweise nicht zugänglich. Das aber jedem 80er Retro Fan die geschilderten Phänomene bestens bekannt sind versteht sich dennoch von selbst.
