OK, but not as good as official SLS Saturn controllers

OK, but not as good as official SLS Saturn controllers
This Retrolink controller is a cheaper clone of the official SLS Sega Saturn usb controllers. It looks and feels almost like the SLS controller except for some differences other than the logos:-The dpad is glossy and sits higher than official Saturn dpads. The SLS and all official Saturn dpads have a textured finish.-The shoulder buttons are slightly bigger than official ones so they don't fit the casing very well. Sometimes the L button gets stuck between the two halves of the casing. The shoulder buttons have a matte finish where as the official ones are glossy. They also have a harder and louder click, where as the official controllers have a soft, computer mouse-like click.-The face buttons aren't as responsive as the SLS controllers. If you just tap them lightly, it doesn't register. You have to push the buttons all the way in. The SLS controllers are light to the touch.-When used on PS3, the button layout is different than the SLS controllers. There is no PS3 Start button (Start button = PS3 Select button).I think the Play Sega controllers are identical to these as those also seem to have a glossy dpad and has the same K&T sticker on the back.Out of the box, the controller isn't very good. I played some SSFIVAE on PS3 with it and it does work, but I didn't like that I had to jam each button in to make sure the hits register. What I did was switch out the dpad and the conductive pads under the dpad and face buttons with the same parts from a broken original Saturn controller that I had laying around. Now the dpad and buttons are responsive and work as good as the SLS controller except for the shoulder buttons. The original Saturn dpad has been in use since 1995 and still hasn't broken so it's sure to last a lot longer than the clone dpad that was in it, which I hear can break easily. I bought 2 of them at $4.99 each with free shipping (don't pay more than that for these clones). It is worth getting if you have parts from an official Saturn controller to swap in, and if you can put up with the weird button layout when using it on PS3. Otherwise, get the official SLS controller if you can.

I would suggest not playing games that require rotating the d-pad. (example- nights into dreams) it can twist and break off during intense gameplay. mine hasn't broke yet but i can tell its weak. other than that I think it a good game pad. cheap easily replaced.

Despite having the design of the popular Sega Saturn controller, the quality of this controller is far below par and anyone who spends a significant amount of time on retro and/or 2D gaming on the PC or PS3 will be better off investing their time and money in acquiring a genuine SLS Sega USB controller.

Several years ago, SLS (Sega Logistics Service) released their official Sega Saturn-style control pads in Japan for the PS2 and for PC/Mac in an assortment of colors. Since they are a perfect replica of the Saturn control pad (the greatest 2D controller of all time), they were wildly popular. At only around $35, the demand by far exceeded the supply. SLS manufactured them again in late 2008 and Chinese sellers flooded eBay with them, but quickly selling out once again.
Unfortunately, SLS has not made any more since, and we are now left with two options; either buy these cheap but crappy knockoffs from Retrolink and other crap brands (which all probably come from the same factory). Or pay top dollar in the rare instances that the genuine SLS brand control pads appear on eBay and Yahoo Japan Auctions.

I did both- I shelled out $50.00 for a used SLS Sega USB control pad on eBay. I also ordered a Retrolink brand and GTron.
The difference in quality is night and day:

*Genuine SLS Sega Control Pads (the ones I recommend)*- the d-pad is textured and movement is smooth, precise and solid, producing slight but discernable clicks. The buttons are responsive; not too soft but not too hard to the push. They are perfectly compatible with the PS3, with the X, Y and Z buttons lining up with PS3 square, triangle, and L2, and A B C with X O R2. The shoulder buttons match R1 & L1. They're also perfectly compatible with 2D PS1 games played on the PS3. Whether you are playing on the PC/ Mac or PS3, this controller is simply the best for 2D and some 3D fighters as well as shoot'emups, beat'emups, and the majority of retro puzzle games.

*Retrolink/ GTron knockoff Saturn-style control pads (the ones I am reviewing right now)* - the d-pad is made from hard plastic and is mushy and loose. Not very accurate either in the diagonals. The buttons are quite stiff, especially the shoulder buttons. They are not always responsive, either. These controllers are only partially compatible with some PS3 2D games, but the button configuration is completely screwed up; the 'start' button acts as 'select,' the B button is X, C is O, A is square, etc... They are not at all compatible with PS1 games played on the PS3.

Final verdict: If you are a casual gamer and don't spend a lot of time gaming on your PC/ Mac and don't wanna spend a lot of money on a controller and don't care about non-responding buttons screwing up your game, then the Retrolink Sega Saturn pad is for you. For those who spend more than a few hours weekly gaming on the PC and/ or want a controller fully compatible with the PS3, look for the Sega SLS Control Pad. You will find it once in a while on eBay, but it can also be found on Yahoo Japan auctions by entering "sega kontrouru paddo" in Katakana into the search. Use a proxy service to bid and buy! They are by far much better than any of the control pads that third party companies like Madcatz, GTron, or Retrolink have ever done.

I really had a tough time choosing a USB controller to buy. Most of them look pretty cheaply made and nobody seemed to have 1 for regular SEGA. I figured the Sega Saturn style would work for the SEGA emulator I had, and it worked just great!

Now the controller is very light, and the buttons don't have the best feel. It kind of reminds me of when you would get a cheap knock off back in the day. That being said, it is responsive and I can't say it's affected game play.

The cord is a good length, its got enough quality, and its easy to use for any type of game. I've played NES, SNES, GBA, SEGA, old DOS games and more and they all work with this controller.

This product doesn't get 5 stars, because it does feel cheap and may not last long. Maybe I'll update this review when it beraks so you can see how long it takes.

P.S. I just got another one for my Brother in law because he saw how my wife and I had so much fun playing the original Prince of Persia, Dr. Mario, Tetris, etc...

This controller is only a tease. I get the saturn feeling when I play it, but the controller only lasts from 2 days to maybe 2 weeks (a month if you are lucky) the D-pad always goes out in a direction. Its s shame because it isn't many controller that come close to the Saturn controller except this one. (madcatz big clunky controller absolutely sucks) but this controller is very poor in quality and only will fail within a few times of playing it. Sadly, I think this company know this.

They break easy. Fully functional but not as tough as the original.
Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2015
These are very cheap controllers, and they definitely feel that way. They are super light, the buttons have a lot of wiggle, the bumper buttons are awful and don't always register, and the D-pad is questionable at best. If the plastic used to make this controller was much thinner it would be translucent. I bought these to use with a raspberry pi RetroPi emulator, and they work okay for that. I can't get some of the buttons programmed right, but I think that is my lack of Linux knowledge and less the controller's poor quality. I like the idea of six surface buttons for old sega games, but unless you need to have that many buttons I would avoid these controllers. They haven't broken on me yet, but I'm not holding my breath.
