Editorial Reviews

With his whimsical, melancholy music, Yann Tiersen has become a sought-after composer, not only for his soundtrack work, but in his own right. Borrowing from French folk music, chanson, musette waltz and street music, as well as rock, avant-garde, and classical and minimalist influences, Tiersen's deceptively simple style has been likened to Chopin, Erik Satie, Philip Glass, and Michael Nyman. This is his 2005 album featuring guest vocalists Liz Frazier, Jane Birkin, Stuart Stapple & Dominique A. EMI.

It is for sure not Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain soundtrack... Way deeper and whole-souled.

If you like the old drawer chest of your grandma and bouquet of wild flowers on top of it, if you like to sit in old grandpas chair on lazy and calm summer evening - is for you.

Les Retrouvailles is a passionate album. Happily and sadly romantic with a wonderful touch of mystery and mystique. In total, there are sixteen tracks of pure mental delight decorated with piano, accordion, harpsichord, violin, mandolin, bass, guitar, banjo, melodica, toy piano, typewriter, vibraphone and various rhythm instruments.

I can't even describe to you how great this cd is. It is simply spectacular/amazing. After hearing the soundtrack to Goodbye Lenin, I was quite disappointed. I thought that Amelie might have been the peak of Yann's career but I was very wrong. Les Retrouvailles is 120568x's better than Amelie. I definitely recommend it, especially track three...wonderfully mezzmerizing. It puts you right on the banks of the Siene looking up at the effiel tower. I am so grateful to have found this incredible music. Thanks again Yann!

I love this music, I cant even describe it. It is out of this world.

If you liked his soundtrack of the move Amelie, you are going to love this one, it is a little more contemporary and more diverse. Its great.

If you are a fan of Yann Tiersen then you will like this record. I don't think it is as strong as Le Phare or Rue des Cascades but it is very solid. There are a couple songs with electric guitar, bass, and drums which are good. But personally, I like when he sticks with the traditional instruments. Elizabeth Frazer sings on 2 songs and I think that's pretty exciting.

i fell in love with les retrouvailles with the first time i've heard La Veilee.Real touching melody, complexity in feelings simplicity at the music side as a Tiersen classic. I got the limited edition with the DVD box.In the DVD we can see how Tiersen is creating his music, it is all about the whole recording cycle of the album. And for the audiophiles and real Tiersen fans, DVD gives the chance to see the partitions for guitar, violin, xylophone and toy piano like how he is combining the separete recordings. And for finally who loves details, he is listening to Cocteau Twins album where we can see for few seconds. Well i guess i have rambled a bit, to sum up this album is Tiersen's one of the greatest works and i can^'t finish without saying a word about Elizabeth Fraser's amazing and unique voice.

I never saw the movie "Amelie", but loved the minimalist semi-Classical music intermixed with French folk music of Yann Tiersen that I had to get another CD. Therefore I bought "Les Retrouvailles" & was surprised with the Eric Satie musical sound effects intermixed with a Michael Nyman type of minimalist Classical music, with some French folk music on the side. Eric Satie (1866-1925) was a French classical composer around a century ago that used typewriters & parade sounds to create his music. Michael Nyman is a modern English composer that creates a more classical version of Phillip Glass. Most of the music in "Les Retrouvailles" is instrumental with a few songs sung in French. Two songs are sung in English; "A Secret Place" & "Mary". Do I hear the singer of "Tindersticks" in "A Secret Place"?

The first couple of songs almost sounded the same & I thought of a few movie theme soundtracks that never move beyond the main theme, but then the music moved on to a near French affair. A fantastic CD that give repeated listening.

This is the most rewarding CD I've purchased in a very long time. It DOES have the sound, like others have said, like Amelie, but goes beyond that general "Sound". It's deeper. the 6th track sounds like a mixture of Enigma and Amelie. Others have a touch of early U2 (think Achtung Baby) Seriously... Everyone who loves music should have this record, if only for it's depth, and creative appeal.
