Gr 7 Up—Descendants of survivors from remote colonies who escaped the apocalyptic Doom return to Earth to find a planet seemingly devoid of life. Teen engineer Myra Jackson of the underwater 13th Continuum and warrior Aero Wright of the outer space Second Continuum have landed on the surface with a few companions in an attempt to reunite with the First Continuum and reestablish civilization. With injured friends, minimal supplies, and enemies still working against them, the situation seems dire until hope appears in an unlikely form. Seeker, a feral humanoid from the Seventh Continuum, discovers Myra's group starving in the mountains and offers food and guidance. Coming from an underground colony ravaged by radiation and deprivation, Seeker is the most compelling and unfathomable character yet in the series: Does she really intend to help the ragged survivors? What choice do they have but to find out? Revelations about the fate of other continuums contribute to the world-building and enhance the story line. Strong female and male characters join forces to save what's left of the world, while a subplot of love triangles adds emotional suspense. Classic themes of loyalty in the face of adversity and good vs. evil underpin this plot-driven science fiction adventure. Although this is the second volume of a trilogy, enough backstory is included to allow teens to pick it up without having read the first installment. VERDICT Fans of The 13th Continuum will not be disappointed with this lively sequel.—Suzanne LaPierre, Fairfax County Public Library, VA
Praise for Return of the Continuums:
"Strong female and male characters join forces to save what’s left of the world, while a subplot of love triangles adds emotional suspense. Classic themes of loyalty in the face of adversity and good vs. evil underpin this plot-driven science fiction adventure. Although this is the second volume of a trilogy, enough backstory is included to allow teens to pick it up without having read the first installment. Fans of The 13th Continuum will not be disappointed with this lively sequel." - School Library Journal
"Likeable characters, an intricate world, and imaginative settings combine to make a satisfying young-adult read in Jennifer Brody’s Return of the Continuums, the second book of the dystopian Continuum series." - Foreword Reviews
"The pacing and action are noticeably stepped up in this second outing [...] will please fans of the first." Kirkus
"Jennifer Brody does it again with her imaginative dystopian young adult fiction follow-up to The 13th Continuum,. . . [Brody] just gets it; she understands that readers don’t just want another post-apocalyptic tale of survival, but that the book needs characters that can hold up against the bleak and hopeless setting, turning it from nothing to something that is full of life and hopeful. It’s the characters that bring completeness to this novel. Those who were fans of the first installment of The Continuum Trilogy will definitely be fans of the second book, no question. I recommend this to any reader who is a dystopian junkie like me. Pick up this book and find that you can’t possibly put it down."―The Roanoke Times
"The follow up novel to The 13th Continuum is nothing less than a home run for author Jennifer Brody. It builds on a fully realized universe, dense with an ingenious mythology, from book one, yet manages to take readers to a whole new world (pun intended!). Be ready to be angry at the ending, though, because it’s going to leave you clamoring for the final chapter in The Continuum Trilogy!"―Kirby Howell, author of Autumn in the City of Angels
"Return of the Continuums is a riveting, action-packed sequel that kept me up well past my bedtime needing to know how Myra and her friends would survive the dangers of the surface and reach The First Continuum. With plenty of unfolding secrets and an ever-expanding world, this is a series that just gets better and better." - Stephanie Diaz, author of the Extraction series
Praise for The 13th Continuum:
"Brody writes an intelligent narrative that is entertaining as it is introspective about the human race, its fate and where we might end up."-Roanoke Times
"Fans clamoring for a new dystopian science fiction series may appreciate this latest addition to the genre." - School Library Journal

"A fascinating premise and compulsively readable debut. It totally sucked me in." ―Robin Talley, author of Lies We Tell Ourselves
"With meticulous world-building and an epic scope, Jennifer Brody has created a fascinating sci-fi story. Readers will flip the pages, anxious to answer a question that will determine the future of humanity: Will they reach the surface? ―Pintip Dunn, author of Forget Tomorrow
"The 13th Continuum manages to be smart, surprising, and a good time, all at once. That's hard magic to pull off, but Jennifer Brody makes it seem easy. Swift and surprising, this novel is such a confident debut. Here's to many more."―Victor LaValle, author of New York Times Notable Book of the Year, The Devil in Silver

A wonderful second installment in the thrilling dystopian sci-fi Continuum Trilogy, Return of the Continuums: The Continuum Trilogy, Book 2, picks up right where The 13th Continuum: The Continuum Trilogy, Book 1 left off. Myra Jackson, her little brother Tinker, and her friends are on The Surface of the Post-Doom earth, and are on their epic quest to find the First Continuum. We also check in with Aero Wright and his companions from the Second Continuum, who are also on their way to the First Continuum as well.
One of the many favorite things I have of this series is the prologue flashbacks to a selected Before Doom scene. Seeing the selection process of Aero and Myra’s ancestors – as well as the deliberation process into how the Chosen were selected and placed into their Continuums – was incredibly intriguing, and we find out more on this later on towards the end of Return of the Continuums: The Continuum Trilogy, Book 2. Author Jennifer Brody’s skillfulness in seeding in clues that have a massive payoff towards the end of this volume in the Continuum Trilogy shows incredible mastery in crafting Return of the Continuums: The Continuum Trilogy, Book 2 into a successful second book that advanced the plot in a significant way that has purpose in moving along the stories of all of the characters we have come to know and love with great purpose. We get to see Myra, Aero, Tinker, and friends grow as they journey across earth from where they all respectively crash landed from the Thirteenth Continuum and the Second Continuum, and painstakingly try to find their way to the First Continuum.
We get to see the toll being a Carrier has on both Myra and Aero, the immense burden of carrying the hope of survival for their people has on both them. The people they have lost along the way, making sure that those people who sacrificed their lives for the cause did not die in vain.
I must commend Jennifer Brody on the incredible development of the character introduced briefly in the epilogue of The 13th Continuum: The Continuum Trilogy, Book 1 – Seeker – one of the new characters we meet in Return of the Continuums: The Continuum Trilogy, Book 2 as a significant POV character. Her story and journey as become one of my favorite viewpoints into this incrediblly vast and expansive world that Jennifer Brody has created in such an immensely masterful way. She is unlike any character that I have read in contemporary literature, yet her uniqueness and her connection to another one of my favorite character’s in Jennifer Brody’s universe.
Without spoiling the amazing reveals and surprises that occur – especially in the tail end of Return of the Continuums: The Continuum Trilogy, Book 2, I must highlight the continued love and admiration I have for the incredible attention to detail Jennifer Brody executes throughout the course of the Continuum Trilogy. The historical journal entries, flashbacks, memories, Constitutional Amendments and Laws. The deep mythos of the thirteen Continuums that Jennifer Brody has created is intriguing and compelling; and as a reader, I feel such a high level of trust in reading Jennifer Brody’s stories, because I feel confident in her very capable hands that any and all questions that may arise as we journey on with Myra, Aero, and the many other characters that populate Jennifer Brody’s universe will be answered in due time. Every character has their own unique motivation, and (as we see from the Before Doom scene in Chapter 0, to the final roundtable near the closing of Return of the Continuums: The Continuum Trilogy, Book 2)Jennifer Brody has very thoughtfully chosen to reveal bits and pieces of information in a very calculated way that maximizes our emotional response to the story to the fullest.
There are not many books that, when I finish reading them, I feel the immense need to take a day to digest the contents of the story and mourn the end of the book in order to move on with my day. Jennifer Brody’s writing is one of those rare finds that elicits a visceral emotional response from her readers, and manages to still leave the reader wanting more. I cannot wait until I am able to reunite with Myra, Aero, Seeker, and everyone else in The United Continuums: The Continuum Trilogy, Book 3; and find out what Jennifer Brody has in store for them, and for us!
I received a copy of this book from The Fantastic Flying Book Club for the purpose of providing an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of this book. [Honest aside: I loved this book so much, I purchased 3 hard copies of this book for myself and friends.]
